More than 130,000 students enrolled each year in more than 45 colleges, universities, and technical institutions—pursuing degrees, certifications, and training in more than 500 distinct programs. Some of the nationally known regional colleges include Emory University, Georgia State University, Georgia Institute of Technology or Georgia Tech, Agnes Scott College, and Kennesaw State University. Atlanta University Center with five private institutions is the largest consortium of historically black colleges and universities in the nation. As a region noted for groundbreaking research, Atlanta ranks near the top nationally for higher education research spending. The commitment to education is evident at every turn, including the HOPE Scholarship that provides free tuition and books for Georgia residents who qualify with a B average and then attend a Georgia public college. Students can also use the scholarship toward a financial grant for an in-state private institution.
