Quality of Life
Cherokee County was named for the original inhabitants of the area, the Cherokee Indians. The late 1800s saw a boom in the marble and cotton industries as settlers discovered the abundant natural resources of the land. Years later, the county’s pristine land and precious resources are still valued and efforts are being made to ensure their preservation. The county’s adopted Township Plan has been heralded as the design of the future, providing room for quality growth while protecting the area’s many natural resources, scenic vistas, and comfortable residential lifestyle.

Nestled at the southern end of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Cherokee County has the highest mountains and most undeveloped land in metro Atlanta. On the rise of the Piedmont, Cherokee County offers pristine woodlands, beautiful lakes and convenient access to metropolitan Atlanta, U.S., and world markets. Today’s Cherokee County is home to metro area commuters as well as its own collection of small industries. I-75 forms the county’s main economic and transportation artery, providing exceptional accessibility and connectivity to metro Atlanta and other Southeastern markets.

Services
Northside Hospital-Cherokee in Canton, a 84-bed, non-profit, facility, serves the healthcare needs of county residents with surgery, outpatient, maternity, and emergency services.

This turn-of-the-century area has changed little since the 1920s and is still brimming with several elegant historic homes. Canton, the county seat of Cherokee County, was founded in 1833. It was originally named Etowah, for the Etowah River that flows nearby, but was officially incorporated as Canton in 1834. The name Canton was derived from the city’s failed attempt to emulate Canton, China’s prosperous silk-producing industry. Later, the town found success in mining both marble and gold. Eventually textile production and cotton crops became the region’s major industry. Today, newcomers will find an array of housing styles throughout the city including Victorian, traditional, and ranch.
