As the economic and employment hub of Clayton County, Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport employs 12,000 county residents. With the world’s largest airport terminal building and one of the busiest airport operations globally, Hartsfield has been the biggest generator of economic opportunities for Clayton County in the past 10 to 15 years. In addition to the airport, Clayton County benefits from thriving manufacturing, commercial, and distribution centers. Located in Morrow, Clayton College and State University, a four-year institution, is one of the 34 state-supported colleges and universities in Georgia.

Offering a tremendous variety of things to do and places to see, the county hosts an endless list of activities and intriguing sites just waiting to be discovered. The City of Jonesboro offers a fascinating glimpse of the Old South. Here, antebellum homes and several Civil War sites form a 300-acre National Historic Register District. The great outdoors offers an equally abundant list of treasures. The county is home to more than 50 parks, including the Reynolds Nature Preserve and the Jesters Creek Trail. Here, residents can enjoy some of Georgia’s best fishing, hiking, biking, and wildlife viewing. Golfers will enjoy the use of one private and three public golf courses.

The Clayton County School System, the sixth largest system in Georgia, serves over 45,000 students annually. Student honors include Odyssey of the mind championships, HOPE Scholarships, and Georgia’ SMART students. Clayton College and State University, a four-year institution, located in Morrow, is one of the 34 state-supported colleges and universities in Georgia.

The Southern Regional Health System is readily available for all healthcare needs. The system includes Southern Regional Medical Center, a 410-bed, full-service hospital located in Riverdale. Other facilities include the Southern Regional Psychiatric Center.

Originally called Leakesville, the city was later renamed for Samuel Goode Jones, a civil engineer who once helped revive the struggling local economy. The Jonesboro of today is located a short 20 minutes away from Atlanta and 12 miles south of Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport. Jonesboro’s Main Street buildings, some dating back to the mid-1800s, have been renovated and now house elegant antique shops, gift shops, and government offices. Jonesboro’s diverse selection of housing includes stately traditional homes as well as historic estates from the Antebellum period. Showcasing newer ideas in housing design, picturesque Lake Spivey serves as the centerpiece for a distinct collection of new golf communities. The suburban community of Riverdale is one of the largest municipalities in Clayton County. The city is located approximately five miles south of Atlanta’s Hartsfield International Airport on the metropolitan area’s “Southern Crescent.” Just 10 miles from Atlanta, residents enjoy small-town friendliness within easy access of world-class cultural and entertainment centers. Highway 85 has served as the primarily transportation route through Riverdale for decades, following the same north/south route as the former railroad. Throughout the last four decades of the 20th century, Riverdale continued to evolve into a modern city and a growing Atlanta suburb that offers a welcoming hometown atmosphere.
