Quality of Life
While Jasper serves as the county seat, other incorporated municipalities include Talking Rock and Nelson. A railroad line built in 1833 from Atlanta, through the valleys and mountains passes of Pickens County to Tate and Newton, made possible the development of large marble quarries that would be highly influential throughout the region. One of the largest marble veins in the world is in Pickens County, running at least four miles long. It is a half-mile deep and almost as wide in some places. Over 60 percent of the monuments in Washington D.C. are made from Pickens County marble.

While the marble industry continues to flourish, the western portion of the county also supports significant agricultural production. A favorite recreation and sightseeing destination, the Blue Ridge Mountians, bordering the county on the north and east, have become a popular site for vacation spots and second homes in recent years. Exciting community events taking place in Pickens County each year include the Marble Festival every October and the Maypole Fest each May. Overall, Pickens County is proud to boast scenic beauty, excellent cultural opportunities, a strong economy, a laidback lifestyle, and easy access to greater Atlanta.

Services
Students of Pickens County are served by three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. Additionally, the Pickens County Headstart program is administered by the Board of Education. This program, the first of its kind in the nation, provides preschool services for children aged three and four.

Post-secondary education is available from the Appalachian Technical Institute in Jasper. The school offers eighteen diploma and technical certificate programs. Degrees in additional fields are available in cooperation programs with Reinhardt College, Truet-McConnell College, and Dalton College.

The county seat of Pickens County, Jasper was named for Sergeant William Jasper, a highly recognized American soldier in the Revolutionary War who died on Georgia soil. Incorporated in 1857, the town was once a community of pioneers who established a lumber mill and marble plant. Today, the city is home to a close-knit community of friendly residents who relish Jasper’s small town atmosphere. Newcomers will find shady, tree-lined streets and quiet family-oriented neighborhoods throughout the community. Home styles are typically traditional and are similar to those found throughout rural Georgia.
