The quaint and attractive city of Rising Sun serves as the county seat and focal point of commercial, educational, and cultural development. Rising Sun Pendleton Art Center in the heart of historic downtown Rising Sun features the Southeastern Indiana Friends of the Arts gallery with ever-changing exhibits. The “First Weekend” of each month is an exciting time of new exhibits and open studios. Harps on Main is another unusual arts resource, where visitors can take a self-guided tour and see how harps are made. The opening of this shop by a well-known harp craftsman has placed Ohio County on the map with aficionados of that exquisite musical instrument.

Historic downtown Rising Sun is being revitalized to showcase its original charm, already winning awards for outstanding results. The Governor of Indiana awarded Rising Sun the 2003 Governors Arts Award, while the Indiana Main Street organization awarded Historic Downtown the Innovation Award for its “Arts as Education” concept. Southern Indiana Rural Development Projects also recognized the city with the Southern Indiana Community Legacy Award. One of the true treasures of this area is the Ohio River Scenic Byway, the link that ties together the history of Southern Indiana. At times hugging the river itself, the route twists and turns its way past cypress swamps, scenic overlooks, archaeological sites, stately mansions, riverboat casinos, and caverns. As it meanders along this panoramic path, it passes by picturesque barns, lush vineyards, and leafy orchards.

The crowning glory of the area’s historic sites is the 1844 Ohio County Court House with its Classical architectural style and Doric details, a stately structure that was constructed entirely from gifts and donations. The Ohio County Historical Museum displays a variety of exhibits, including the world-famous Hoosier Big Boy racing boat that set the speed record on the Ohio River in 1924. The housing selection blends many lovely older homes along tree-lined streets with newer residential construction that enjoys a country setting. The county seat of Rising Sun is the focal point of government, regional services, commercial development, and cultural activity in Ohio County. The lion’s share of conveniences and attractions are located in the Rising Sun area, although the county is also home to four townships: Cass, Pike, Randolph, and Union. Neighbors easily become friends in this small-town setting, where community events are well attended. The annual Navy Bean Fall Festival is the largest of the seasonal celebrations, drawing visitors to the area’s only horse parade, live musical entertainment, wonderful food, pony rides, arts and crafts, and home-cooked bean soup. The city is home to the county’s historical museum, the grand historical courthouse, and the regional art center.
