ACADEMICS / PUBLIC EDUCATION SYSTEM

Enrollment & Registration
Colorado is an “open enrollment” state that allows parents to enroll their children in any public school in the state if space is available. The local board of education determines the entrance age in Colorado, although the School Attendance Law requires all residents between the ages of 7 and 16 to attend school. Registration requirements vary from district to district, but most request legal proof of age with a raised-seal birth certificate and physician-signed proof of specific immunizations. The cut-off date for five-year-olds to be eligible for kindergarten registration is also determined by the individual school district. Transfer students must register in the districts where they reside. Most districts request transcripts from the previous school. For complete details on the documentation needed for registration, consult your local district. For general information about public education in Colorado, contact:

Charter Schools
Charter schools are publicly funded schools created by a group of parents, teachers, or community members. These schools reflect unique educational approaches or philosophies and enjoy independence from the local school district. They are open to all students on a space-available basis. Magnet Schools
Also known as focus or alternative schools, these institutions apply specific educational approaches or emphasize a special field of study such as performing arts or science. The atmosphere can be highly structured or open and embrace a variety of learning and teaching philosophies. Magnet schools are open to the public on a space-available basis with a lottery-style admission policy. For details on magnet schools that may be available in your area, contact your local school district.

Testing And Assessment
The Department of Education posts the latest results of the Colorado Student Assessment Program (CSAP) and ACT Test scores by district on the Internet. Challenging academic standards and school and district accountability are the three targets of the state’s school reform efforts.
