The town of Murfreesboro is one of the fastest-growing cities in the state and is appropriately named the “Most Livable Town in Tennessee.” Communities like La Vergne and Smyrna are located in close proximity to the panoramic jewels of the Stones River and J. Percy Priest Lake, the latter serving as a regional recreational attraction. In recent years, this area has been able to boast such superlatives as one of the largest automotive manufacturing operations under a single roof in North America, one of the world’s largest book and video distribution centers, Tennessee’s fastest growing university, and the largest dairy processing operation in the Southeast.

Services

Lifestyle
Like the other counties that make up the Greater Nashville metropolitan area, Rutherford shares a rich and colorful page of history from Native American life to post-Revolutionary War settlements. A wealth of buildings and homes from the 1800s have been preserved, from simple stone and brick houses to manors that showcase elaborate Victorian architecture and some of the world’s finest antique collections. Famous sites include Stones River National Civil War Battlefield, the Cannonsburg pioneer village, and the farm complex of Confederate Civil War hero Sam Davis. At the age of 21, Sam Davis chose death rather than reveal information to Union forces. The City of Murfreesboro was the site of one of the Civil War’s largest battles, claiming 23,000 casualties. Today’s national park cover 430 acres to include a museum and the first national cemetery created by Congress.

Recreational opportunities abound in this land-rich area. Water-sport enthusiasts can enjoy boating, fishing, and skiing at Percy Priest Lake. Golfers have the advantage of nearly year-round play on verdant and well-maintained courses. Tennis fans will find first-rate courts and racquet clubs, while hundreds of sports teams are available for all age groups. Soccer, softball, baseball, and volleyball are just a few of the competitive sports that bring friends and neighbors together. Swimming, bicycling, hiking, picnicking, or just enjoying a lush park are all popular leisure activities.

Although the world-class attractions of Nashville are close to home, the county has developed cultural amenities and special events. Murfreesboro provides a highly developed urban environment that offers musical concerts, performing arts, county festivals and art galleries. Antique districts blend with modern malls and shopping plazas throughout the county for an abundance of retail options.
