HEALTHCARE / OREGON HEALTH SCIENCES UNIVERSITY (OHSU)

Leading the Way
The University of Oregon Health Sciences Center opened its doors in 1974 as a state agency governed by the Oregon State Board of Higher Education. In 1995, OHSU became a nonprofit public corporation governed by a Board of Directors with members appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Senate. OHSU serves as the hub for Oregon’s health-care community, educating health professionals and biomedical researchers while it provides patient care, cutting edge research, and a vast array of community services.

As a professional teaching institution, OHSU is second to none. U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks the School of Medicine in the top 2 percent of American medical schools for its primary care education program. From 96 to 100 percent of graduates in the M.D. program pass their licensure exams on the first attempt. The nursing Master’s programs are also ranked among the top 2 percent for excellence and quality, and the pass rate on the Western Regional Examination Board’s clinical licensing program for graduates of the dental program ranges from 98 to 100 percent.

The main campus for OHSU covers more than 100 acres on Marquam Hill, supplemented by dozens of offices, clinics, education and research facilities throughout the state. OHSU operates a 263-acre campus west of Portland that includes the Oregon Regional Primate Research Center, the Neurological Sciences Institute, and the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute. This expansive property adjacent to the Oregon School of Science & Engineering and the Capital Center Technology Institute allows OHSU to expand services and research while acting as a catalyst for Oregon’s developing bioscience industry.
