SHOPPING / UNIQUE DESTINATIONS

Richmond Districts

Carytown
Located on Cary Street from the Boulevard to the RMA, this nine-block shopping area offers an unusually diverse selection of shops, boutiques, restaurants, and gourmet food stores. Originating in 1930 with the Cary Court Shopping Center, Carytown has evolved and grown over the decades. You’ll find unique shops that display everything from Oriental rugs to lingerie and even pet supplies. Don’t miss the spectacular annual event known as the Carytown Watermelon Festival. For an entire week in August, the entire Carytown district transforms into a lively and colorful street party with special activities for residents of all ages.

Shockoe Slip
Also located on Cary Street are the historic Shockoe Slip and Shockoe Bottom areas,  charming districts of cobblestone streets, restaurants, hotels, boutiques, art galleries, antiques shops, and clothing stores. Just a short distance from the James River, this wonderful district is actually a collection of quaint, renovated warehouses. As you stroll down old-world brick sidewalks and look into shop windows, take a moment to turn your gaze up toward the fine architectural detailing of the building facades. With just a little imagination, and you can almost hear the shouts of the dock workers, see the dusty streets filled with men and horses, and catch the aroma of freshly cured tobacco. Today, this colorful and historic district pulsates with new life and a truly engaging shopping ambiance. When the sun sets and the stars appear on the horizon, visit one of the many clubs that feature live music, comedy, or dancing in one of Richmond’s most popular neighborhoods for nightlife.

The Shops of Libbie and Grove
Located “On the Avenues” of Libbie and Grove, this quaint shopping area in the West End is reminiscent of an exclusive collection of boutiques nestled in a small resort town. Approximately 45 specialty shops and fine restaurants line both sides of the street, tucked away in one and two-story buildings or elegant Victorian-style homes featuring  awnings, porches, and sidewalk cafes. Many professionals have also set up shop in these renovated buildings, drawn by the appeal of this neighborhood atmosphere.
