Nestled in the heart of Utah’s scenic alpine country, Summit County is home to several distinctive communities. Park City emerges as the undeniable hub of culture, tourism, and recreation. The city serves the entire county as a center for world-class ski resorts, cultural activity, dazzling nightlife, and luxurious properties. Most of the remaining population centers in this region are small and rural in nature, focused on serving the area’s agricultural enterprises.

In addition to the majesty of the Wasatch Mountains, the close proximity of the high Uinta Mountain Wilderness region gives Summit County a “backyard” of pristine lakes, towering pines, and magnificent vistas. This region of breathtaking natural beauty is only a 30-minute drive from Salt Lake City, offering the pinnacle of rural tranquility as well as easy access to world-class urban amenities. Much of the vast expanse of Summit County is devoted to the rustic, solitary activities of farming and ranching where the cattle and sheep industries playing a dominant role in both lifestyle and economy. Anchored by Park City, the synergy between tourism and recreation is responsible for the lion’s share of revenue in this corner of the region.

Lifestyle
Closely aligned with tourism and hospitality, the retail sector of Park City is unusually well developed. One of the most popular retail destinations is the Tanger Outlet Center in Park City, offering name-brand merchandise at deep discounts.

The heart of Summit County is historic Park City, graced with all the architectural charm, trappings of prosperity, and romance of a community that sprang to life as a mining town more than a century ago. Newcomers will discover stately older homes as well as elegantly restored buildings that now serve as delightful cafes and restaurants, fine galleries, gift shops, and quaint boutiques. In contrast to so many of the mining “boom” towns, Park City avoided the fate of becoming another Western ghost town. With its alpine setting and Utah’s reputation for delightfully powdery snow, the area was a natural for downhill and cross-country skiing. The first ski resort open in the mid 1940s, followed by three other resorts within a four-mile radius.

Developers were equally ambitious to develop Nordic or cross-country ski trails in this winter wonderland. Today, the Park City area has three distinctive ski resorts that combine more than 4,200 acres of prime trails. The United States Ski Team had been based in Utah since in 1974, consolidating in Park City in 1988 to form today’s United States Ski and Snowboard Association. Avid skiers continue to shower accolades on the Park City area as a premier downhill and snowboarding facility. Park City Mountain Resort has been consistently ranked in the top ten of the Ski Magazine readers poll for the last 17 years.

As one of the state’s fastest growing and most popular communities, Park City serves the smaller communities within Summit County with an array of cultural, retail, and educational facilities. Subdivisions have been quick to develop and grow beyond Park City’s boundaries in the area known as Snyderville Basin. Unincorporated communities surrounding Park City already include Summit Park, Silver Springs, Jeremy Ranch, Silver Creek, Kimball Junction, and Pinebrook.

Summit County is a mecca of cultural delights, spearheaded by the Sundance Institute, founded by actor Robert Redford to support and encourage the art of film-making. The Institute’s most impressive event is the world-famous annual Sundance Film Festival each January. Enhanced by the presence of Sundance Institute and inspired by the panoramic mountains, artists and visual impressionists are drawn to Park City. Art galleries are filled with the work of famous photographers, sculptors, and painters, while other venues fill the calendar with live theatre and sporting events.

From golfing and tennis to riding in a hot air balloon, the active life abounds in Summit County. The Uinta Wilderness area offers miles of mountain biking, horseback riding, and hiking trails. Backpacking, fishing, and nature observation are also popular activities. This vast expanse of wilderness makes a rich habitat for elk, moose, mountain lions, black bears, bighorn and a large variety of birds.

Although the housing selection in Summit County is diverse and varies with the community and the area, luxurious homes and condominiums dominate the scene in and around Park City. Abundant glass, decking, patios, and terraces ensure spectacular alpine vistas that take full advantage of the rugged terrain and rich land resources. A solid infrastructure based on a progressive local government and strong civic pride blends with an unparalleled quality of life to make Summit County one of Utah’s most desirable addresses.
