Those who enjoy the slower place of country will enjoy the lifestyle in Carbon County, where clear air and blue skies combine with a relaxed and friendly community atmosphere. Carbon County makes up the northern section of the panoramic region known as “Castle Country.” Here, some of Utah’s most magnificent geological formations and desert canyons contrast with rushing rivers, alpine meadows, and unspoiled wilderness.

One of the more culturally diverse regions in Utah, the county has attracted a population where more than 30 different ethnic groups represent cultures and religions from around the world. Much of this migration began in the county’s early coal-mining and railroading days. Many long-established residents of Carbon County have ancestral ties to Japan, Italy, Greece, and the Baltic nations.

From its early agricultural and ranching economy, Carbon County moved into mining, and railroad activity—a trend that holds true today. The impressive coal reserves within this region have combined with other raw materials to keep mining, transportation, and energy at the forefront of activity. Sprawling farms remain scattered throughout the county, with livestock dominating the list of commodities. Hundreds of commercial businesses and services serve the county, from financial institutions and restaurants to a regional hospital. National retailers, along with specialty shops and Main Street districts, add to the convenience of daily life.

Services
Dedicated to the highest educational standards, the county provides innovative programs, technology training, and involvement for all ability levels. In fact, nearly one quarter of the high school students are enrolled in classes at the College of Eastern Utah. CEU maintains a main campus in Price, two education centers, and an “electronic campus” that covers a four-county region in southeastern Utah. As a major contributor to the region’s economic vitality and quality workforce, the college offers a variety of courses in applied technologies.

Castleview Hospital in Price anchors the network of healthcare services and facilities, offering comprehensive care in a variety of specialties. Cardiac care, 24-hour emergency care, occupational therapy, non-invasive surgery, advance imaging, a multi-purpose intensive care unit, pediatrics, a newborn nursery and intensive care, and sports medicine are among the services. The hospital also offers diet and nutritional counseling, outpatient services, a wellness center, and women’s services.

Lifestyle
Dedicated arts and civic organizations combine with the College of Eastern Utah to ensure residents a full calendar of cultural events and performances. The college presents art shows, dance and theatre productions, author’s reader series, and a variety of musical concerts. Local talent is also showcased in melodramas, musicals, festivals, celebrations, and community theater.

Rich in historic treasures, Carbon County is home to world-renowned dinosaur quarries, ancient rock art, Native American dwelling sites, pioneer cabins, and intriguing ghost towns. The famous Nine Mile Canyon north of East Carbon features some of the finest petroglyphs on the Colorado Plateau. Museums cover everything from prehistoric to current topics. Aficionados of history can revel in Butch Cassidy lore or tour the Phantom Art Galleries along Helper’s historic Main Street.

Those who seek outdoor adventure surrounded by natural beauty can look forward to hunting, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, rock-climbing, snowmobiling or engaging in off-road exploration. Miles of plateau trails offer breathtaking vistas, pristine lakes, and abundant wildlife. The desert areas feature colorful sandstone canyons with spectacular overlooks, dramatic formations, and remote pools. Alpine regions invite winter sports or provide a cool summer retreat. Green River along the county’s eastern border is internationally known for whitewater rafting thrills. Closer to home are golf courses, picnic areas, tennis courts, parks, playgrounds, sports fields, and recreation programs for all ages and interests.

Within Carbon County’s friendly neighborhoods, you’ll find a variety of housing options, from older brick homes in the heart of town to luxury estates in countryside settings. Sprawling ranch homes and horse properties are available within an easy commuting distance from educational, employment, and retail opportunities. Little wonder that Carbon County is a rapidly growing region. Few locales can rival its collegiate influence, prime parcels of land, panoramic scenery, and exceptional recreational opportunities.

How did the unusual name of “Helper” evolve? Very simply, the town was named for the extra “helper” engines that pulled coal trains over the steep Soldier Summit. Local amenities in this small town are impressive, from a performing arts theater to heated city pool, rodeo facilities, and championship golf course. The expanded facilities of Price City are just minutes from home, adding cultural, educational, and shopping advantages.
