The area in northern Utah that makes up Weber County is also known as the “Golden Spike Empire,” named for the final golden spike that completed the transcontinental railroad in America’s colorful Western history. This panoramic land filled with natural beauty and open space is ideally located between the scenic Wasatch Mountains to the east and the Great Salt Lake to the west.

Like many corners of Utah where mining and railroading dominated the early economy, Weber County is a land marked by a richness of ethnic and cultural diversity. Even today, the county relies on farming and agricultural activity for substantial revenue. Serving as the economic powerhouse for the county, the City of Ogden is also the hub of social, cultural, educational, and political activity for Weber County. Ogden is home to a regional center for the Internal Revenue Service, and Weber County lists the government and its military operations as two of its major employers. Other major contributors to the region’s economic health are wholesale and retail trade, service, and manufacturing. Diversifying the county’s economy even further are the products derived from natural resources in forests and mineral deposits. The dynamic industries of recreation and tourism are beginning to play a more dominant role in the county’s economy. Ogden boasts three premier ski resorts and was chosen to host several of the games for the Winter Olympic competition in 2002. Students of all ages receive a quality education in public and private schools in Weber County, where dedicated staff members are able to utilize modern classrooms that include high technology. Ogden-Weber Applied Technology College offers a wealth of specialized programs close to home at an affordable cost. Weber County also claims one of the finest undergraduate universities in the West, Weber State University in Ogden. The university is particularly renowned for its programs in the health professions, education, technology, and business. In fact, Weber State University was the first institution of higher education to build a satellite that was actually launched into space.

Ogden is also the healthcare capital of Weber County, offering two major healthcare institutions: McKay-Dee Hospital and the Ogden Regional Medical Center. A strong network of skilled professionals, emergency care centers, and family clinics are available to meet the need for routine healthcare as well as wellness care. As part of the Intermountain Health Care system, McKay-Dee Hospital focuses on providing leading-edge specialties with nationally recognized programs and services in heart, rehabilitation, and newborn intensive care. Ogden Regional Medical Center offers 239 licensed beds and a medical staff that exceeds 300 to ensure quality, compassionate care. One of the more highly developed of the small communities outside of Ogden, Roy City is situated just northwest of Hill Air Force Base. In spite of considerable growth and expansion, Roy City welcomes newcomers to a small-town, friendly atmosphere. The housing selection includes well-kept older homes as well as reasonably priced newer construction in a variety of architectural styles. Utah is a natural playground and Roy is located in the heart of a recreational paradise.
