James Lauderdale<\/a>, a Tennessean killed  at the Battle of New Orleans. Lauderdale County is in the northwestern corner  of the state. It is bounded on the north by Hardin, Wayne, and Lawrence  Counties in Tennessee, and on the west by the State of Mississippi. The  Tennessee River forms the southern boundary between Lauderdale County and  Colbert and Lawrence Counties. The county covers approximately 660 square  miles. Lauderdale is part of the Florence-Muscle Shoals Alabama area, also  known as &#8220;The Shoals&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lifestyle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lauderdale County and the  surrounding region is considered a very affordable and likable place to live. Florence City  Schools is the organization of the K\u201312 public school system. It is made of: &nbsp;Florence High School (grades 10-12,) Florence  Middle School (grades 7-8) and the Florence Freshman Center (grade 9.) Elementary  age children are served by three primary schools in the district. There are also  four private schools in Florence: St. Joseph Regional Catholic School for  grades K\u20138, and Mars Hill Bible School, Shoals Christian School, and Florence  Christian Academy, which are multi-denominational K\u201312 schools.<\/p>\n<p>Higher  education is served by The University of North  Alabama, which was established in 1830, and is in Downtown Florence. The campus  was designed by well-known landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted, who  designed Central Park and the Mall area of Washington D.C. Approximately 7,000  students attend UNA including, international students from over 50 countries.  UNA is also home to the only live Lion mascots in the country. The lions that live  on campus, Leo III and Una, born on November 18, 2002, now reside on the campus  in the 12,764 square-foot George H. Carroll Lion Habitat.
