Welcome to Alaska! \u00a0 You are welcome to use your valid non-commercial out-of-state \/ country license to drive in Alaska, provided you are at least 16 years of age.\u00a0 If you will be driving in Alaska for more than 90 days, you are required to obtain an Alaska driver license within that 90 day time period.\u00a0 (If you have a commercial driver license, you must obtain an Alaska license within 30 days of becoming a resident.)
\nAn applicant who is at least sixteen years of age and holds a valid driver’s license from another state or country must meet the following requirements to obtain an Alaska driver’s license:
\nSurrender their out-of-state or Canadian driver license (If a person’s out-of-state license has been lost or stolen, they will be required to obtain a “Letter of Verification” or “Certified Driving Record” from the previous state.)
\nPass a written knowledge test
\nPass an alcohol and drug awareness test upon reaching the age of 21.\u00a0(See further information below this checklist.)
\nPass a vision test
\nProvide proof of legal name, date of birth and social security number
\nPay a fee
\nPass a road test (Not required for applicant’s that surrender a valid out-of-state or Canadian driver license.)<\/p>\n

A driver license issued to an applicant under the age of 21 will expire 90 days after the applicant’s 21st birthday.\u00a0[AS 28.15.099] The applicant would be required to pass an alcohol and drug awareness knowledge test to obtain a license.\u00a0[AS 28.15.085] All other Alaska driver license’s expire on the applicant\u2019s birthday and are valid for approximately five years.<\/p>\n

Permits
\n<\/strong>An applicant for a learner’s or instruction permit must be at least 14 years of age. If the applicant is under 18 years of age, they must have\u00a0parental consent to obtain an original, duplicate or to renew a permit. Effective July 1, 2007 – A permit can be renewed one time, only.
\n
\n<\/strong>The applicant will be required to pass the written knowledge test, a vision test and pay a fee prior to being issued a learner’s or instruction permit.<\/p>\n

A permit issued to an applicant that is 19 or 20 years old will expire 90 days after the applicant’s 21st birthday.\u00a0[AS 28.15.099]\u00a0All other permits are valid for two years from the date of issue.\u00a0 If a driver has a learner’s permit from another state, they must obtain an Alaska learner’s permit before driving in Alaska.\u00a0 The applicant must pass an alcohol and drug awareness knowledge test to renew their permit or to upgrade from a permit to a license<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
