Quality of Life<\/strong>
\nA region once criss-crossed with Indian trails and dirt roads, Douglas County now offers its population a network of highways, including I-20, that that provides excellent access to the metro Atlanta area and other regional markets. Benefiting from the luxuries of the nearby urban conveniences, Douglas County residents enjoy living in a comfortable small town atmosphere without missing out on the one-of-a-kind amenities found in Atlanta. The rolling, wooded terrain of Douglas County provides a spectacular setting for a multitude of outdoor sporting activities. Residents enjoy the nearly year-round use of six golf courses, two driving ranges, and a miniature golf course. The county operates 166 acres of parks, 32 athletic fields, lighted tennis courts, and an outdoor amphitheater. The county is also home to the 2,000-acre Sweetwater Creek State Park, a popular destination for fishing, boating, picnicking, and hiking.<\/p>\n

Services<\/strong>
\nDouglas County residents benefit from the proximity of Emory Parkway Medical Center. This 256-bed facility, located in Lithia Springs, offers state-of-the-art surgery, emergency, women\u2019s health, outpatient, obstetric, and neonatal services. In addition, the 98-bed Wellstar Douglas Hospital offers a full range of services.<\/p>\n

The county\u2019s Mercer University is the second- largest Baptist-affiliated institution in the world. Located in Lithia Springs, the university boasts a 165-year-old tradition of academic excellence, public service, and research. The school\u2019s most popular four-year programs include pharmacy, liberal arts, and law.<\/p>\n

With a strong emphasis on community involvement and civic pride, it is not surprising that the county\u2019s two largest employers are the Douglas County School System and Douglas County Government.<\/p>\n

The city of Douglasville was founded in 1875 on a natural rise in Georgia’s topography. As a turn-of-the-century railroad town, the majority of Douglasville’s buildings are one and two-story structures dating back to the mid-19th century and early 20th century. Today, the heart of downtown Douglasville is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as an historic district. While the downtown area offers a myriad of professional and governmental services, as well as specialty shops and restaurants, Arbor Place, a four million square foot regional mall, meets the retail needs of local residents. The city also maintains over 150 acres of parks and other recreational facilities. Douglasville homes are generally traditional in style and set on large, well-planned, wooded lots. Most new housing developments also offer swimming, tennis, and golf facilities.<\/p>\n

Lithia Springs<\/strong>

\n<\/strong>Lithia Springs is an unincorporated area, formerly incorporated as a city, located in northeastern Douglas County. It is home to more than 15,000 residents. The city is named for its historic Lithia Springs (Lithia water) springs. Incorporated in 1882, Lithia Springs was dissolved the first time in 1933. Lithia Springs became incorporated again in 1994, only to be Douglas County’s second completely internal municipality for seven years. In 2001, the citizens voted on March 20 to dissolve the city charter and de-incorporate the city, transferring all assets to the county.<\/p>\n

The history of Lithia Springs begins with Lithia Springs, a natural Lithia water spring. So popular was the curative waters that flowed from Lithia Springs that people came for miles to drink its legendary healing water. This was the start of the growth of this area into a thriving community. Today this area, while no longer officially recognized as a town, still has all the feeling of a close knit community. Residents enjoy a high quality of life with everything they need close to home. With its close proximity to the City of Atlanta residents can enjoy all of the urban amenities of the city but return home to a more relaxed pace of life. Residents also enjoy outstanding natural beauty and the opportunity for excellent outdoor recreation. The Lithia Springs area is home to Sweetwater Creek State Park, a 2,549 acre Georgia state park. The park is named after Sweetwater Creek which runs through the park. The park features wooded walking and hiking trails, the George Sparks Reservoir, a visitor center, a bait shop, and a gift shop, as well as the ruins of the New Manchester Manufacturing Company. The Visitor Center displays artifacts that belonged to Native Americans and remnants from the Civil War era.<\/p>\n

Residents with families have access to quality educational facilities including seven K-12 schools in Lithia Springs, including 5 public schools and 2 private schools. Lithia Springs public schools are in the Douglas County School District.<\/p>\n

The Lithia Springs area is a great place to call home. It has easy access to all of the major business centers in the area, great shopping and restaurants close to home and easy access to everything that Metro Atlanta has to offer.<\/p>\n
