The county was named for George Walton, a Georgia Governor, US. Senator, and signer of the Declaration of Independence. The county is now home to seven municipalities, the largest being Monroe, the county seat. Others include Between, Good Hope, Jersey, Loganville, Social Circle, and Walnut Grove.<\/p>\n<p>Rich in history, the county boasts several interesting historic sites including Jacks Creek, Kilgore Mill Covered Bridge, Causlon Plantation, the Brodnax House, and Thompson&#8217;s Mill. The Walton County Courthouse, built in 1883, is serves an a lasting example of the Second Empire architectural style. Today, the largest and most popular festival in Walton County is Monroe&#8217;s Crepe Myrtle Festival held each September. The county also hosts Georgia\u2019s National Fair each October. A 10-day event, activities at the 628-acre complex include a circus, livestock and horse shows, youth events, and fine arts competitions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Services<\/strong><br \/>\nGeorgia\u2019s comprehensive highway system conveniently links Walton County with the metro area via I-20, U.S. Highway 78, and Georgia Highway 316. Monroe Municipal Airport, Amtrak, and Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport provide transportation to hundreds of other destinations.<\/p>\n<p>With its location between Athens and Atlanta, Walton County residents have access to several higher education choices. Major institutions include the University of Georgia, the Athens Area Technical Institute, including a center in Walton County, DeKalb Technical Institute and Gwinnett Technical Institute.<\/p>\n<p>Walton Medical Center has been the primary resource for healthcare in Walton County since 1959. The facility is an affiliate of the highly recognized Emory University System of Health Care. The city\u2019s nearest neighbors include Snellville, Grayson, and Walnut Grove. Loganville is also located conveniently close to Highways 78, 20, and 81. Currently, Loganville is noted as one of the fastest growing cities in Georgia. Offering both residents and visitors gracious Southern hospitality, many family-owned shops throughout the city offer a variety of goods and services. The city\u2019s most popular attraction is the Old Rock Gym on Main Street, an impressive structure built during the depression. With its plentiful residential subdivisions and quiet country feel, Loganville is particularly attractive to families with young children.
