Those residents enjoy an enviable quality of life that is flavored by the rural nature of the county. The county contains one incorporated town, Taylorsville. The remaining 10 communities are all unincorporated and include; Bethlehem, Stony Point, Hiddenite, Drumstand, Vashti, Ellendale, Wittenburg, Sugar Loaf, Little River and Millersville.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Lifestyle<br \/>\n<\/b><\/strong>Alexander County has activities and opportunities for both its residents and visitors. Whether an outdoor enthusiast looking for to go fishing, hiking or to go for a challenging ride while 4-wheeling the county has it covered. For those less outdoor inclined there are places to satisfy a taste for the arts, culture, and history. \u00a0Rocky Face Mountain Recreational Area is one of the best places for outdoor recreational opportunities. The 318-acre park is a former rock quarry dating back to the early 1920s. Today, the former rock quarry area includes a paved ADA walking track as well as a picnic shelter, restrooms, and park office. The quarry area features a sheer cliff face which is attractive for rock climbers. Outside the quarry area, the park includes approximately four miles of hiking trails which will take hikers along the top of the quarry cliffs and to the mountain peak. \u00a0The county maintains five public parks in its park system: East Alexander Park (Hiddenite), Jaycee Park (Taylorsville), Town Park (Taylorsville), Bethlehem Park (Bethlehem) and Dusty Ridge Park (Wittenburg). The Town of Taylorsville maintains one park: Matheson Park. Residents enjoy tennis, softball, rag ball, football, baseball, basketball, soccer, horseshoes, hunting, boating, fishing, hiking, picnicking, children\u2019s playgrounds, and walking or jogging on track facilities. \u00a0Residents who enjoy golf can play at Brushy Mountain Golf Course.<\/p>\n<p>For those looking for something a little different and want to be amateur gemologists, precious stones and gems may be found in Hiddenite at the Hiddenite Gem Emerald Hollow Mines. This is a popular activity with visitors to the county.<\/p>\n<p>For residents who want something a little less vigorous, The Hiddenite Center is a folk life and cultural arts educational and exhibition center located in Hiddenite. A three-story Victorian house has been restored to house galleries and offices. For a taste of the arts, The Alexander Central Auditorium seats 1,000 and is host to a variety of community events.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Services<br \/>\n<\/b><\/strong><br \/>\nArea youth receive a quality education in the Alexander County School District facilities. Maintaining a focus on new technologies and instructional methodologies, staff members are dedicated to preparing students for leadership in a competitive world. Taylorsville is also the county seat. Located in the northern Piedmont foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains Taylorsville was established in 1847. The area is bordered on the south by the Catawba River and on the north by the Brushy Mountains, one of the oldest mountain chains in the nation. Two-thirds of the area is farm land. With the average farm being about 90 acres. Major commodities include poultry, dairy, tobacco, apples, forestry products, grain crops, and beef cattle. This agricultural lifestyle is what makes Taylorsville such a great place to call home. Residents enjoy the slower pace of life and sense of community that living in a small town offers. The local community takes pride in its town and an active role in its ongoing growth. The students of Taylorsville are served by the Alexander County Schools district. The only high school in the district, Alexander Central High School, is located in the town. However, 9% of students at Challenger Early College High School (a public high school in Hickory, North Carolina operated by Catawba County Schools) reside in Alexander County. From the Brushy Mountains to Lake Hickory Taylorsville offers numerous housing options throughout the town, from farmhouses to in-town apartments.
