Its located in close proximity to Rock Hill, SC, to the south  and Charlotte, NC, to the north. The town is home to more than 9,000 residents  with a total of nearly 35,000 individuals residing within the entire Township.  Fort Mill is named after a colonial-era fort built by the British and a grist  mill located on the nearby Steele Creek. Scotch-Irish settlers began arriving  to the area in the late 1700\u2019s and a small settlement soon developed. Fort Mill  grew rapidly in the late 1800&#8217;s as textile mills were established.
