The small community of Currituck serves as the seat of Currituck County government, one of the few county seats in North Carolina that has never officially incorporated. The community is considered to be a part of the Inner Banks region, although the area is also referred to as the Currituck Outer Banks. Regardless of which moniker you choose to call it, Currituck enjoys a picturesque water-rich setting in close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, the Outer Banks vacation communities of North Carolina, and Virginia’s Hampton Roads region. One of the highlights in Currituck is the Knotts Island Ferry operated by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, providing free shuttles across Currituck Sound to Knotts Island\u2014another of the county’s unincorporated developments. The prominent highways that serve Currituck are NC 168 (Caratoke Highway) and Courthouse Road. Ironically, the tourist attraction of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse is not actually located in Currituck but in nearby Corolla across the sound on the Outer Banks.<\/p>\n

The small unincorporated community of Knotts Island is situated on a marshy island bordered by Currituck Sound, North Landing River, Back Bay, and Knotts Island Bay. The only land access to Knotts Island is from Virginia Beach using Princess Anne Road, although a free ferry is available in the town of Currituck. This island community is characterized as a hunting and fishing leisure destination with numerous duck hunting blinds on land and in the bay. The Swan Island Hunting Club, located across the bay on Swan Island, is relatively popular with visitors including notable artist Bob Timberlake. Commercial development is extremely limited but a general store provides daily goods and the island also offers a restaurant and bar. Bay Villa is the center of watercraft launching, and local vineyards offer wine tastings.<\/p>\n

The unincorporated community of Moyock in Currituck County is strategically situated along NC 168 just south of the Virginia state line. The community is also situated at the end of the Chesapeake Expressway toll road just a short drive from Norfolk, Virginia. Because of its location and surrounding transportation efficiencies, this small community has been experiencing rapid growth as an emerging bedroom community for Hampton Roads. Another feather in the cap of Moyock is the presence of a number of facilities relating to Blackwater Worldwide, the world’s largest private training and security company with government and non-government clients. The company headquarters stretch over 7,000 acres to provide training for the United States military and police forces among others.
