Pasquotank County and Elizabeth City serve as the economic and commercial hub for the northeastern North Carolina mainland. The building of the Dismal Swamp Canal in the 1800s linked the sounds and rivers of this region with the port of Norfolk and serves today as a transportation channel for thousands of boaters in the Intracoastal Waterway.<\/p>\n

Although Elizabeth City is the picturesque leading city and Pasquotank County seat of government, this famous waterfront town actually stretches across the county line into Camden County.
