ACADEMICS \/ ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION <\/strong><\/p>\n

In addition to providing quality public education system, the Hampton Roads area is home to a selection of independent schools, both parochial and private. Most independent schools are accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS) and\/or the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).The Virginia Council for Private Education or VCPE oversees accreditation of nonpublic preschools as well as elementary and secondary schools in the Commonwealth. The VCPE website offers a directory of accredited schools as well as member schools that are non-accredited.<\/p>\n

While accreditation provides confidence in the quality and organization of the school in many areas that include curriculum, teacher\u2019s standards and well-equipped classrooms, it does not dictate how or what the school teaches. Interested parents should research the available private schools for the teaching style and curricula that would best serve their child\u2019s academic, social and emotional needs.
