Although the sprawling area within the City of Henderson popularly called “Green Valley” is not a separate municipality, it proudly maintains its own identity and character. By the closing of the 20th century, a large segment of Henderson was moving away from its “blue collar” roots and transforming into the picture of upscale suburbia. This newer and more modern “community within a community” became known as Green Valley. Within the vast area of Green Valley are a wide selection of residential developments filled with fine homes and neat landscaping. Shopping centers and a large regional mall attest to the retail expansion that has kept pace with the influx of residents. In fact, it is the overwhelming popularity of the subdivisions and master-planned communities nestled in Green Valley that had driven Henderson to the top of the nation’s list of fast-growing cities. Residents are proud of their well-managed city often called “the other side of southern Nevada.”

Located midway between Las Vegas and Boulder City, Henderson is Nevada’s largest municipality in square miles and second in population after Las Vegas, covering nearly 93 square miles. Separated from Boulder City by mountains, desert, and the Lake Mead Recreation Area, Henderson serves as the gateway into the Las Vegas region. Home to a large population that is over 200,000, Henderson is ideally located just 7 miles from the famous Las Vegas Strip. Known for its premier master-planned communities, outstanding parks and superb recreational facilities, cultural attractions and rapidly growing economy, the city continues to draw national attention for its quality of life. Henderson enjoys high rankings as a retirement haven, as a “kid friendly” environment, as a great place for home-based business, and as the chosen site of one of Nevada’s premier meeting centers.
In the heart of Henderson, particularly in the “old downtown” district along Water Street, newcomers will discover many of the small clapboard shops from yesterday. Most of the vintage storefronts appear unchanged by the passing of the decades, a fact that has preserved the city’s original ambiance of small-town friendliness and accessibility. A healthy economy that blends manufacturing and retail activity with tourism ensures a bright and prosperous future of continued expansion. The city’s status as the home of several food and snack manufacturers prompted one city official to muse that Henderson is the Sweet Tooth Capital of Nevada. A community college campus, local healthcare facilities, and exceptional services underline Henderson’s enviable position as one of the state’s proudest communities.

Just outside of North Las Vegas is the base complex of Nellis Air Force Base, “home of the fighter pilot.” Boasting the largest and most demanding advanced air combat training in the world, Nellis is a proud member of the United States Air Force’s Air Combat Command. Every combat aircraft in the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps — from fighters, bombers, helicopters and airlifters to command and control — are housed on the base. The Air Warfare Center, established in October 1995 and located at Nellis AFB, manages advanced pilot training and integrates many of the Air Force’s test and evaluation requirements. The Air Warfare Center manages the land that makes up the Nevada Test and Training Range. Approximately three million acres of land constitute the largest range of its type in the nation. Another five-million-acre military operating area is shared with civilian aircraft. Nellis Air Force Base is located approximately eight miles northeast of Las Vegas and covers more than 14,000 acres. However, the land area occupied by Nellis and its restricted ranges is about 5,000 square miles, with an additional 7,700 miles of airspace north and east of the restricted ranges that are available for military flight operations. The Nellis work force of about 9,500 military and civilians makes it one of the largest single employers in southern Nevada. The total military population adds more than 40,000 regional residents, including family members and military retirees. Since the majority of the base employees reside in the neighboring communities, Nellis AFB continues to have a positive and far-reaching affect on the growth and development of metropolitan Las Vegas.
