Just outside of North Las Vegas is the base complex of Nellis Air Force Base, \u201chome of the fighter pilot.\u201d Boasting the largest and most demanding advanced air combat training in the world, Nellis is a proud member of the United States Air Force\u2019s Air Combat Command. Every combat aircraft in the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps \u2014 from fighters, bombers, helicopters and airlifters to command and control \u2014 are housed on the base. The Air Warfare Center, established in October 1995 and located at Nellis AFB, manages advanced pilot training and integrates many of the Air Force\u2019s test and evaluation requirements. The Air Warfare Center manages the land that makes up the Nevada Test and Training Range. Approximately three million acres of land constitute the largest range of its type in the nation. Another five-million-acre military operating area is shared with civilian aircraft. Nellis Air Force Base is located approximately eight miles northeast of Las Vegas and covers more than 14,000 acres. However, the land area occupied by Nellis and its restricted ranges is about 5,000 square miles, with an additional 7,700 miles of airspace north and east of the restricted ranges that are available for military flight operations.
