Rural Meade County is situated approximately 45 miles southwest of Louisville and just 17 miles south of Corydon. Featuring scenic views of the rolling Ohio River that meanders along all 56 miles of its northern side, Meade County is well known for its natural beauty. Picturesque farmland, deep forests, rolling hills, and wonderful recreation areas dot the landscape. With its mild year-round climate, this area is truly ideal for those who love outdoor activities as well as growing families and retirees. The county seat of Brandenburg serves as the lively hub of the region, joined by a number of smaller communities. Agribusiness fuels the economic engine, and the Meade County Fair draws throngs of visitors. Nearly a third of the Brandenburg area, in fact, is still zoned for agriculture.<\/p>\n

Services<\/strong>
\nSeveral major hospitals are located within a reasonable distance from Meade County communities, including Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown, Harrison County Hospital in Corydon, and Breckenridge Memorial Hospital in Hardinsburg. Close to home, Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s HealthCare operate the Jewish Hospital Health Center-Meade County. This expansive 10,000-square-foot facility is staffed by primary care physicians and a nurse practitioner that specialize in family medicine, diabetes care, prenatal care, allergies, cardiology, neurology, and general surgery. Offering two trauma rooms, advanced imaging, and laboratory services, the center also provides comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation services through the Frazier Rehab Institute Network. The Health Information Center also provides a wealth of free resources on diet, exercise, and various health conditions.<\/p>\n

The educational opportunities are well-developed in and near the county, including eight institutions of higher education that operate extension campuses at the Fort Knox military base less than 20 miles southeast of Brandenburg. Open to the public, these extension campuses award both undergraduate and graduate degrees that include doctorates in policy analysis and education. Participating institutions include Central Texas College, Eastern Kentucky University, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, Sullivan College, University of Louisville, Western Kentucky University, Elizabethtown Community College, and McKendree College. College courses are also offered at Brandenburg High School through Elizabethtown Community College.<\/p>\n

The main campus for Elizabethtown Community College and the colleges and universities in the Louisville metropolitan area are available within a reasonable commute, providing a full spectrum of certification and degree programs on every academic achievement level. Meade County provides some unique opportunities for adult and continuing education, including Tech Prep, a combined secondary and postsecondary program of studies that leads to an associate degree or diploma in a vocational-technical field. Designed to serve high school students, Tech Prep is equally advantageous for adults who want to develop new skills or enhance their education. The Meade County Adult Education Program and the Bluegrass State Skills Corporation add the available education resources.<\/p>\n

\nMeade County is a paradise for those who appreciate the pleasures of country living and outdoor adventures. Many of the smaller communities that still thrive in this area were originally established in the late 1700s or early 1800s, adding to the strong feeling of community pride and sense of place. Much of Meade County is still devoted to agricultural activity, and agribusiness is the largest employment sector. The mild weather and rich kaleidoscope of seasonal beauty make this area a popular place for retirees and families in all stages. Dubbed as the gateway city to the Heartland of Kentucky, historic Brandenburg serves as the commercial, recreational, and entertainment hub of Meade County. Along the periphery of Brandenburg, the planned community of Doe Valley was originally developed as a recreational area in the 1950s. Today, hundreds of homes in varying architectural styles and sizes surround the sparkling 360-acre Doe Valley Lake to offer a year-round vacation lifestyle. Featuring the Patton Museum of Armor and Cavalry, Fort Knox is the proud home of the Army Armor Center, the U.S. Army Recruiting Command, and the ROTC eastern region headquarters. The military reservation actually covers a four-county region with a population of 23,000 soldiers, family members, and civilians to rank among Kentucky’s largest communities.
