Situated in northwestern Texas south of the Panhandle on the Llano Estacado or High Plains, rural Hockley County is bordered by Lubbock County on the east. Rich soils of clay and sandy loam and a growing season of 196 days support a traditionally agricultural community. The most striking geological feature in this region is Yellow House Canyon, carved by the Brazos River and named for the massive yellow bluffs near its head. The legacy of hometown pride, cooperation, and hard work that has always been the cornerstone of Levelland is immediately evident today in the beauty of its city parks and the vitality of its downtown district.
