The vast expanse of Luce County is largely preserved by Michigan\u2019s Department of Natural Resources, the Nature Conservancy, and private enterprise. Sections of privately owned land are scattered throughout the county, with the majority of residents living in and around the village of Newberry. Just 30 miles beyond Newberry is the Lake Superior shoreline.<\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>Residents of Luce County are fortunate to have a first-rate healthcare center close to home: the Helen Newberry Joy Hospital & Health Center. Local schools provide a quality education from preschool through high school, staffed by dedicated instructors who have the advantage of smaller classes and the opportunity to provide more individualized attention. Lake Superior State University (LSSU) in nearby Sault Ste. Marie in Chippewa County is a popular choice for higher education. LSSU draws students to a private-college atmosphere in a smaller public university, distinguishing as being the only public university in Michigan with a primary focus on undergraduate education. The village of Newberry and surrounding Mcmillan Township are home to the majority of Luce County residents. The village is located at the southern end of the township and shares in some of the town administrative responsibilities. Newberry is surrounded by vast acres of state and national forests and is one of two gateway communities that lead to the spectacular Tahquamenon Falls area. Newberry is proud of its designation as Michigan\u2019s Moose Capital. Newcomers will find a pleasant village atmosphere with commercial conveniences, opportunities for dining, and a brisk recreational tourism business. While some homes are seasonal or vacation rentals, nearly 70 percent of the Newberry housing is owner occupied.
