The mountain of ore first discovered here was 180  feet high and 1,000 feet wide, known today as the \u201cWorld\u2019s Largest Gemstone.\u201d  The name of Ishpeming is Chippewa for \u201con the summit.<br \/>\nThe moniker was well-suited for a city that is perched along the dividing ridge  between the waters of Lake Superior and Lake Michigan, about 850 feet above  Lake Superior.
