Serving as a haven from today’s roller-coaster pace, the region offers over 400,000 square acres of rolling wonderland, covered bridges, and tree-lined byways. The natural beauty of the Pennsylvania countryside forms the backdrop for friendly communities that honor the past as diligently as they plan for the future.

One of America’s most well-preserved historical counties, Greene is bounded on the north by Washington County, on the east by the Monongahela River, on the south and southwest by West Virginia and the Mason-Dixon Line. Many residents of this area are commuters to Pittsburgh, less than an hour’s drive north, or Morgantown in West Virginia to the south. The tranquil retreat of Greene County is made even more appealing by the lack of congestion and traffic.

Services
In addition to first-rate educational programs for preschool through 12th grade, the county operates a vocational and training school that specializes in career programs. Waynesburg College is a coed, four-year, liberal arts institution in Waynesburg with a student population nearing 1,500. Evening classes and continuing education programs make this college an asset to the entire region. The public schools, Waynesburg College, and the county government have collaborated to form the Greene County Technical Consortium, recognized by the Smithsonian Institute as a national model for improving education with high technology.

Waynesburg also serves as the center of healthcare for the surrounding area, anchored by Green County Memorial Hospital. In addition to diagnostics and treatment, the hospital provides wellness center with a full-service gym that is open for public use. Transportation efficiencies include Morgantown Municipal Airport in nearby West Virginia, providing service to Pittsburgh and other major destinations in the Northeast. Greene County Airport borders two industrial parks and provides private aircraft facilities.

Lifestyle
The cultural community of Greene County is enhanced by the presence of Wayesburg College and well as the Waynesburg Theater and Arts Center. The college sponsors a series of guest speakers, live stage performances, and amateur theater productions. Both cultural and sports programs are sponsored by the Central Greene School District. The county itself serves as a mecca for outdoor enjoyment and activity, with virtually unlimited places to hike, camp, boat, golf, swim, fish, and hunt. Marinas combine with outdoor swimming pools, well-maintained trails, campsites, and riding stables to support every interest.

Hidden Valley and Seven Springs ski resorts are located with 90 minutes from Greene County, providing everything from night skiing to snow boarding. League sports are especially popular, and local festivities abound. Festival names like Covered Bridge, Pioneer, Pumpkin, Bituminous Coal, Harvest, and Arts in the Park offer a glimpse of the traditions and spirit of this welcoming land. Three shopping centers in Franklin Township as well as the variety of retail shops in Waynesburg blend with specialty stores in towns like Carmichaels to meet every need. Nearly half of the county’s residents have settled in the areas surrounding either Waynesburg or Carmichaels.

Waynesburg, Franklin
Municipal Offices
Waynesburg Borough
724-627-8111
http://waynesburgboro.com
Franklin Township
724-627-5473
www.franklintownship.us

Chamber of Commerce
724-627-5926
www.waynesburgchamber.com

Although the Borough of Waynesburg is no longer a sleepy town that “rolls up the sidewalk at night,” the small community tucked into an area less than one square mile has managed to preserve its friendly spirit and intimate atmosphere. Many of spectacular Georgian and Victorian homes were built in the early 19th century, when the discovery of gas, oil, and coal brought affluence to local property owners. One of the jewels in this borough is the classic colonial-style courthouse built in 1851.

The compact community of approximately 5,000 residents in less than one square mile serves as a center of healthcare, commerce, government, and education. The region known as the Waynesburg area actually encompasses the borough itself, West Waynesburg, Morrisville, and the surrounding community of Franklin Township. Outside of Waynesburg is rolling farmland and verdant open space, providing abundant land for beautiful new construction. A hospital, four-year college, and county airport contribute to the area’s influence.

Carmichaels, Cumberland, Center
Municipal Offices
Carmichaels Borough
724-966-5506
www.co.greene.pa.us/secured/gc2/depts/eo/twp/carmboro.htm
Cumberland Township
724-966-5805
http://cumberlandtownship.org
Center Township
724-499-5487
www.co.greene.pa.us/secured/gc2/depts/eo/twp/center.htm

Chamber of Commerce
724-627-5926
www.waynesburgchamber.com

Providing another hub of business, cultural amenities, and commerce for Armstrong County residents, the Borough of Carmichaels and the surrounding townships of Cumberland and Center form another major population center. Modern, well-equipped classrooms enhance the public education system, underlined by a cooperative spirit between school, community, higher education, and area businesses. Active cultural groups like the Greene Academy of Art and the Greene County Council on the Arts offer quality programming, concerts, and events that include the Arts in the Park Festival, the Covered Bridge Festival, and a holiday crafts show.

Carmichaels is less than one square mile in area, although both townships are large and sprawling. Carmichaels Golf Club provides an affordable place for golfers to perfect their backswing, while residents of all ages enjoy local parks and sports facilities as well as leagues and recreation programs. Close to home are vast expanses of unspoiled land such as the Ryerson Station State Park, or marinas along the Monongahela River. Cumberland Township provides an outdoor public swimming pool.
