TRANSPORTATION \/ MOTOR VEHICLE INFORMATION

\nDrivers License
\n<\/strong>New residents must obtain a New Jersey drivers license within 60 days after residency has been established. Bring acceptable proof of age, identification, address, and proof of your Social Security number (or exemption) to the Motor Vehicle Agency to purchase an application for driver examination permit. Applicants under age 18 will be required to have their applications signed by a parent or guardian. After studying the manual, bring the exam permit to any Driver Testing Center to take the road test, vision test, and possibly a driving test. Upon receiving your New Jersey license, you must surrender your out-of-state license.<\/p>\n

Vehicle Registration & Titling
\n<\/strong>New residents must obtain a new vehicle registration and title their automobiles in New Jersey with 60 days of establishing residency. Immediately following registration at one of the Motor Vehicle Agencies, vehicles must undergo an annual inspection at a state-operated center. Registration fees vary with the age and weight of the vehicle. New residents must bring their out-of-state title to the Motor Vehicle Agency and complete the sales tax form and application for certificate of ownership. If a lien is involved, you will also need to complete a lien release request. Although the title will be mailed to you later, a receipt copy of the title is given immediately and the vehicle can be registered if properly insured.
