Quality of Life
In 1821, the Georgia General Assembly created Newton County from portions of Henry, Jasper, and Walton counties. Georgia’s 53rd county was named for Sergeant John Newton, a Revolutionary War hero. Like much of Northern Georgia, the land that now houses Newton County was once part of the Creek Indian Nation. Gold mining was prosperous in Newton County during the late nineteenth century, however, no active mines operate today.
The county of Newton borough became the city of Covington in 1822 and the county’s historic Newton County courthouse was built in 1884. Today, the county is home to five municipalities including Covington, Mansfield, Newborn, Oxford, and Porterdale. Oxford is home to Emory At Oxford, a branch of Emory University, located just north of Covington. Chartered in 1836, it is the original campus of the university.
Services
While pleasantly removed from the metropolitan area, Newton County retains unparalleled access to both the local region and markets beyond. Air transportation is available via Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport, DeKalb-Peachtree Airport, and Covington-Newton County Airport.
The Newton County School System proudly strives to provide excellent educational programs that ensure the best possible future for each of its 11,000 students. All schools in the Newton County System meet the rigid standards of the Georgia Department of Education and are fully accredited by The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

A popular family-oriented community, Covington is enjoys a truly suburban location. Just minutes from I-20 and several outlying Atlanta cities, residents are comfortably removed from the bustling metropolitan area. Covington is, perhaps, most well known for its distinct southern flavor and many grand antebellum estates. In fact, many Hollywood movies and televisions shows, seeking a prime Southern location, have been filmed in Covington and other various Newton County locations. The most notable landmark seen in various productions is undeniably the Historic Newton County Courthouse.
