The small, agricultural community of Mifflintown Borough serves as the county seat, situated along the major thoroughfare of U.S. Route 22/322. The borough actually originated with a plantation owned by John Harris, who settled in 1774 along the banks of the Juniata River at McClellan Ferry. When Juniata County was formed in 1831, the courthouse was built on a square block in the center of Mifflintown, left by the visionary Harris for the county’s use. While the borough provides a focal point of governmental activity, the major of growth and development in Juniata County dots the countryside around it. Residents of the borough and other small communities enjoy a wide variety of housing options, from quaint farmhouses to modern construction and country manors. Sites for outdoor activities close to home are some of the finest in Pennsylvania.
