TRANSPORTATION / WALKING AROUND HOUSTON

Downtown Houston has a system of pedestrian tunnels that are located about 20 feet below the city’s downtown streets. This network of climate controlled tunnels is more than 6 miles long. It includes restaurants and retail stores and connects a total of nearly 95 city blocks. In addition to the underground tunnels are a series of above ground skywalks that also form part of this system.

Access
Only Wells Fargo Plaza offers direct access from the street to the tunnel. All other entry points to the tunnel system are from street-level stairs, escalators, and elevators located inside various downtown buildings that are connected to the tunnel.

The Harris County tunnel at the far north side of the city is not connected to the rest of the system by either tunnels or skywalks. This portion of the system connects Harris County courts, jails, and related buildings totaling approximately 10 city blocks. Six blocks of the St. Joseph Medical Center is connected via skywalks at the southeast corner of downtown near the Pierce elevated.

Tunnel hours are Monday-Friday, 6 am – 6 pm. The only exception is the tunnels connecting the Theater District.  For more information contact:
