Lifestyle
In the heat of the summer, residents and visitors flock to the attractions, beaches and waterways of Warren County. River tubing, swimming, kayaking and boating are all popular ways to cool off in the summer months. In autumn, colorful foliage sets the tone for the season. For locals hiking, biking, scenic driving, rafting, scenic cruises and horseback riding are all ways they enjoy the fall colors. In the winter months, the area becomes a haven for winter adventure seekers as well as those preferring indoor shopping and cultural sites. Melting snow and springtime showers lead into challenging Class I-V rapids on the Hudson, Moose and Sacandaga Rivers, bringing incredible river rafting to the area.

Warren County is brimming with history and culture. For instance, Cooper’s Cave in Glens Falls is a major site first made well known in James Fenimore Cooper’s novel, The Last of the Mohicans. The Hyde Collection, a world renowned museum in Glens Falls, has works from DaVinci, El Greco, Degas, Botticelli, Renoir, Cezanne, van Gogh, Picasso, and more. The Barton Garnet Mine in North Creek is home to the largest concentrations and formations of January’s birthstone and New York State’s gemstone. Almost every town in the county has a museum dedicated to its local history, including The Fort William Henry Museum in Lake George. Additionally, there are numerous historic sites and monuments located throughout the area.

Water based recreation is key to the activities in this county and Lake George is the center of it all, drawing tens of thousands to the county every year to enjoy all that the area has to offer.  Several other lakes, rivers and streams all play into this aquatic fantasy land. In addition to the water based lifestyle, residents and visitors can enjoy quaint small towns, with historic main streets. Restaurants and shops are plentiful, as are farmers markets and unique shops. Newcomers can expect to find homes over every type and style. The county is situated in the heart of New York State’s burgeoning Tech Valley – one of the nation’s premier science and technology centers. Major research institutions, such as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and University of Albany’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering, and technology manufacturers, such as AngioDynamics and GLOBALFOUNDRIES.

Warren County public schools rank in the top-15 of New York State, based on standard state test scores. Expansion Management magazine ranked Glens Falls public schools No. 19 nationally in 2006. In addition SUNY Adirondack offers an extensive program of associate degrees and certificate programs. SUNY Plattsburgh and other four-year colleges and universities are aggressively adding bachelor and master-degree programs at the SUNY Adirondack campus. In addition, there are more than a dozen top-rated colleges and universities within 50 miles of Glens Falls, including the State University of New York at Albany, which is home to the nation’s premiere College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering.

Health care is a priority in the County and is well represented by an excellent full-service hospital, healthcare facilities and human service agencies that offer a continuum of care, resources and support to meet the physical, mental and developmental needs of the community. The County is home to an excellent health care system, a continually expanding and improving hospital staffed with outstanding physicians, support by a dedicated emergency medical service staff. The county is served by Glens Falls Hospital is the largest hospital between Albany, NY, and Montreal, Canada, and the comprehensive health care system for Warren, Washington, northern Saratoga, Essex, Hamilton and northern Rensselaer counties. In addition to the main acute care hospital campus, they operate 29 regional health care facilities.

Bolton

The Town of Bolton is located in the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York in the Adirondack Park and is nestled between the shores of Lake George on the East and the Schroon River to the West. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s Bolton became a popular place for the wealthy to vacation for the summer and many hotels were built along the shore as well as on several of the islands. The shore line in Bolton south to the town of Lake George became known as Millionaires Row due to the many mansions that sprung up along the shore. These home owners as well as hotel guests would arrive in the Village of Lake George and then continue north to Bolton by steamship. Today Bolton is a beautiful town with approximately 2000 year round residents, but summer visitors can swell that population by 10 times or more. Bolton offers all kinds of outdoor activities from swimming and boating in crystal clear Lake George, to camping, picnicking, hiking on a multitudes of trails, biking and golfing. Residents enjoy restaurants, from delis to gourmet as well as all kinds of unique shops and accommodations from the Sagamore Resort to housekeeping cottages and Bed and Breakfasts. Bolton boasts its own school for students from pre K to seniors, a post office, library, museum, senior citizens club, several town beaches, tennis courts, fire department and rescue squad, police department, health center, grocery store and more for year round living.

Chester

Chester is a small town in the northern part of the county. It is home to more than 3,600 residents. The Town of Chester includes the hamlets of Chestertown and Pottersville, located between the Schroon and Hudson rivers and easily accessible from exits 25 and 26 of the Adirondack Northway (I-87). Since its founding as a farming community, Chester has been a home for hardy, innovative entrepreneurs that have held strong beliefs in their heritage and character.  Today local residents welcome visitors and a large second home population to the area.  The hamlet of Chestertown has a commercial and retail core set in the backdrop of the beautiful Adirondack Mountains. World renowned for their beauty, the Adirondacks draw an international visitor base every year. Few locations have the potential to offer a high-quality Adirondack experience with easy access to major transportation corridors such as does Chester.

Glens Falls is the central city of the Glens Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is home to more than 14,800 residents. Glens Falls is located in the southeast corner of Warren County, surrounded by the town of Queensbury to the north, east, and west, and by the Hudson River and Saratoga County to the south. Glens Falls is known as “Hometown U.S.A.”, a title given to it by Look Magazine in 1944.

Glens Falls has two historic districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the equivalent New York State Register of Historic places. The Fredella Avenue historic district includes a series of unique concrete block structures. The Three Squares Historic District comprises the majority of the Central Business District. In addition, several individual structures are listed as well. The Glens Falls region is a major producer of medical devices. Glens Falls is also a principal provider of medical services for a vast 2,600-square-mile region from Saratoga County to the south, extending northward to the central Adirondacks. These services are centered on the Glens Falls Hospital, a 410-bed facility located downtown.

The Greater Glens Falls area has a rich history of theatrical productions. The 300-seat Charles R. Wood Theater is home to the Adirondack Theater Festival, a professional non-profit summer theatre presenting new and contemporary plays and musicals. In addition the Wood Theater provides numerous artistic and cultural presentations throughout the year. The Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council promotes the arts in the Glens Falls region having an annual arts festival and a gallery open year round at the Lapham Carriage House adjacent to City Park. Music in Glens Falls is highlighted by the city’s professional orchestra, the Glens Falls Symphony, which has been performing classical repertoire for 30 years. The city is also home to three museums. Glens Falls operates two public parks, most prominently City Park and Crandall Park. City Park provides green space to the City’s business district and contains the public library. Crandall Park is composed of a lowland pond, war monuments and recreation facilities bordering the city’s Coles’ Woods International Ski Trail system over the northern border with Queensbury. In addition there are a number of neighborhood playgrounds including: The Murray Street Playground, the Mohican Street Playground, the East Field Playground, Haviland’s Cove, the Montcalm Street Playground, and the Sagamore Street Playground.

The city of Glens Falls is a fantastic place to call home. It offers residents and visitors everything that they could want from outstanding health care to recreation and a high quality of life.

Johnsburg

Johnsburg is a town in the northwest corner of Warren County. It is part of the Glens Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town population is more than 2,700. The town is named after John Thurman, an early settler and founder. Johnsburg is the largest town in Warren County by area. It’s a beautiful and friendly community. The Town of Johnsburg includes the hamlets of Bakers Mills, Johnsburg, North Creek, North River, Riparius, and Wevertown. The Hamlet of North Creek is home to Gore Mountain and the Gore Mountain Ski Area. Locals can ski all winter or take part in mountain biking, hiking and Gondola rides throughout the off season. In addition North Creek’s main street is lined with many antique shops, country stores, B&B’s and restaurants offering residents and visitors a rich variety of historic, artistic and cultural attractions. The area is located within an easy drive of Lake Champlain, Lake George, Albany and the Adirondack High Peaks. Johnsburg is an outdoor lover’s paradise and a great place to call home.

Lake George and Lake George Village make up a relatively small community situated on 32 mile long Lake George. Lake George is well-known as a vacation haven and has been for literally centuries. The year round population of Lake George is just over 2,500 residents but the summertime population is well over 50,000 – including second home owners, vacationers and day visitors. The Main Street in town is always a bustle as people spend time visiting the shops, boutiques, cafes and restaurants. In the evening, a walk along the waterfront is a common practice for residents and visitors. The Town’s rich, historical past comes to life in September for the 250th Commemoration of the French and Indian War and 1757 Reenactment of the Siege of Fort William Henry. During the holiday months, the Victorian themed park and streets are full of the spirit of the season. Each February the Town hosts a winter carnival every weekend with fun activities for kids and adults including snowmobile and outhouse races, skating, fishing and ice sculpting, just to name a few. Obviously water based activities dominate the lifestyle in this town. But the mountains and forests that surround the lake are just as spectacular and offer a wide range of adventures for those seeking solace.

Lake Luzerne

Lake Luzerne is home to more than 3,200 residents. It is entirely located within the Adirondack Park, and is an area where
the Hudson River squeezes into a narrow gorge, tumbling over the dramatic Rockwell Falls. Water from the Great Sacandaga Reservoir joins the river in this area as well. Further downstream, the river widens into “The Bay,” a stretch of water broad enough for water skiing. For those who seek quiet water, a chain of four beautiful lakes offer fishing, camping and boating with two public swimming beaches on Lake Luzerne itself. Lake Luzerne has catered to visitors almost since its founding in the late 1700’s. Residents can enjoy fishing, swimming, camping and boating along the peaceful waters of the four chain lakes. Locals enjoy year around activities including summer concerts, craft shows and miniature golf. Sporting enthusiasts can use the local tennis or basketball courts, and in winter, snowmobiles can ride over 200 miles of groomed forest trails. Several area stables offer horseback riding and local attractions still include a weekly rodeo. Residents enjoy a quiet pace of life, surrounding the natural beauty that makes this area so popular.

Queensbury

Located at the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains in Warren County on the shores of Lake George, Queensbury was once a popular hunting and fishing area for the Iroquois.  Today, Queensbury continues to offer a tremendous amount of recreation opportunities for people of all ages. Queensbury’s spectacular scenery draws thousands of tourists each year and has a year round population of more than 28,000 residents. The Town is noted for its amusement parks and is home to Six Flags Great Escape. Residents also enjoy several golf courses, downhill and cross-country ski trails. The Warren County Bike Path runs from Lake George through Queensbury to Glens Falls and is a gem of the area. The many local lakes, like Glen Lake, offer easy access to water for swimming, canoeing and boating.  In addition to wonderful recreation activities and fabulous scenery, Queensbury is the home to many businesses in a variety of industries.  Queensbury is a center for the medical device manufacturing industry, which has a significant presence in the Town, with several national and international corporation based here.  This makes Queensbury a great place to live and work – without having to commute far from home.

The Town of Warrensburg is located in the southeast part of Warren County along the beautiful and historic Schroon River. It is home to more than 4,500 residents. It is located along Interstate Route 87, with New York State Route 9 going directly through the town, and its location at the southeast corner of the Adirondack Park, makes Warrensburg the Gateway to the Adirondacks. The Town of Warrensburg was first settled near Warrensburg village around 1790 and was established in 1813. Though few major industries remain in Warrensburg, the town is more known as the Queen Village of the Adirondacks because of its historic post-colonial and Victorian homes located on tree lined narrow streets. Warrensburg is the home of many small specialty shops, antique shops, second-hand stores, small and large grocery stores, restaurants and numerous quaint bed and breakfasts. Surrounded by many acres of state-owned forested land, Warrensburg is ideal for those interested in hiking, backpacking, trailer and tent camping, biking, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and rafting. The Town has tennis courts, ball fields, and a sandy and secluded beach available for use by the public. Warrensburg also boasts in its immediate vicinity golf courses and dude ranches, as well as easy access to Lake George.
