Quality of Life
In 1870, the county was formed by the Georgia Legislature and named for the granite formations that run underneath its surface. Rockland is the smallest county in the metro area in both size and population and is the second smallest in Georgia. However, with its close proximity to Atlanta, the county continues to experience steady growth and is expected to be home to 100,000 residents by the year 2005. Part of this growth stems from the continuous relocation of established businesses to the county.

The majority of Rockdale County’s industrial activity is based in Conyers, the county’s only incorporated city. The Conyers International Business Park, Gees Mill Business Park, and Sarasota Commerce Center serve as the commercial hub of Atlanta’s suburban East Side. An ideal location for new and expanding businesses, the county is strategically located in close proximity to Interstates 20, 285, 75, and 85 as well as Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport. With 80 percent of Rockdale County’s homes owner-occupied, the neighborhoods showcase an impressive sense of pride and permanency.

Services
Rockdale County schools place academic excellence at a high priority. With 14,000 students and 16 schools, the system boasts a well-rounded fine arts program, a strong core curriculum, and an impressive partnership between teachers, parents, and the community.

Residents are afforded quality healthcare with the presence of Rockdale Hospital. A 107-bed facility, the hospital offers an array of medical services administered by over 300 physicians representing 35 different specialties.

Top employers in Rockdale County include the Rockdale County School System, AT&T, and Visy Industries. Other prominent business sectors and local employers include Olde Town Conyers, The Vaughn Botanical Gardens, and the Georgia International Horse Park.

Incorporated in 1854, Conyers was named for Dr. W.D. Conyers, a banker who gave the Georgia Railroad Company access to build a railroad through the county. The city boasts numerous traditional style homes as well as two-story colonials and one-story ranch designs. As an alternative to the traditional suburban neighborhoods, golf communities are also a popular contemporary housing choice in Conyers. The proud residents of Conyers have continued to go to great lengths over the years to preserve their delightful community. Due to their diligence and hard work, many of the elegant homes and buildings in the downtown Conyers area are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
