Economic Overview

The balanced economy in Greater Dayton and the Miami Valley is largely supported by manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade, and services. Recent decades have seen significant growth in education and healthcare services, with more than 35 institutions of higher learning in the metropolitan area provide a significant number of jobs. Healthcare systems and hospitals have grown steadily, expanding facilities and adding advanced services. Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the research and development center for the US Air Force, is Ohio’s largest employer at a single location. The base has been responsible for attracting to Greater Dayton one of the highest concentrations of aerospace/high-technology firms in the nation as well as scientists, engineers, technicians, and specialists. Another high point for this region is the Miami Valley Research Park, a 1,500-acre university-related facility for corporate and government research firms.
