Whether you prefer the simple pleasure of homemade ice cream from a local dairy farm or an evening of professional theatre or tasting wine from one of dozens of wineries, this region has what you are looking for. Around every corner the scenery changes and a new adventure begins. Residents are able to access a wide range of natural environments close to home, from heavily forested land to verdant hills, sparkling lakes, and open space. The areas communities are equally diverse, harmonizing the rural countryside with industrial and suburban development. Popular sports and outdoor activities include downhill and cross-country skiing, boating and other water sports, fishing, hunting, camping, golfing, tennis, and swimming. History buffs will discover virtually endless sites for exploration and enjoyment in quiet corners of the valley.

Boasting towns that have been settled for centuries, the region is rich in tradition and proud of its heritage. Active historical societies combine with many fascinating facilities to preserve and display artifacts and memorabilia from yesterday. Ithaca is also home to the arts with options such as The Ithaca Ballet, housed at the Ballet Center of Ithaca, the ballet is a professional ensemble corps, having a varied repertoire of classical and contemporary works. Nationally known, and a member of Regional Dance America, the troupe tours the Finger Lakes Region. Then there is the Cornell Department of Music which presents more than 100 concerts each year. Many of the cities and town throughout the region offer theater and arts programs that rival those of larger cities.

There are seasonal farmers’ markets for fresh produce and seasonal goodies. Enjoy a stroll to an art gallery and relish in masterpieces from historical collections as well as emerging regional artists throughout the communities in the area. The area is also known for the many antique shops lining the region. The Finger Lakes region is also home to some of the best wineries that can be found in the eastern half of the country.

Theatrical performances, Jazz ensembles, chamber concerts, festivals, community events, educational programs, children’s playhouses, world class singing, national tours, student recitals, the Finger Lakes…and the list goes on. This region has everything a new resident can hope for.
