Located along U.S. Highway 70 northeast of Lubbock in the High Plains of the Panhandle, rural Floyd County features Floydada as the county seat and largest town. This agriculturally rich area covers 992 square miles of primarily flat land interrupted by the striking geographic features of the Caprock Escarpment and rolling plains to the east and Blanco Canyon and White River to the south. Other major thoroughfares that serve the area include U.S. Highway 62 and Texas State Highway 207. The nearest commercial airline service is approximately 55 miles away at Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport in Lubbock County.

Dominated by agricultural activity, the Floyd County economy largely depends on the production of cotton, wheat, vegetables, soybeans, corn, sunflowers, beef cattle, and hogs. Other revenue sources farm machinery and race car manufacturing, food processing, sheet metal goods, and diverse agribusinesses. Long before crops were grown in this region, grasslands once supported massive herds of buffalo. Comprehensive healthcare services are available close to home in Floyd County, anchored by W.J. Mangold Memorial Hospital in Lockney. This progressive 25-bed critical access hospital has been providing patient-centered medical services to Floyd County residents since 1948. Hospital services include a full array of medical and surgical specialties and a Swing Bed Program that provides rehabilitation services and skilled nursing care. In addition to home health care services, Mangold Memorial provides access to a full range of therapies including speech, occupational, and physical. The city of Floydada is home to a location for West Texas Medical Center, providing a wide spectrum of services including prevention screening for patients of all ages, wellness exams, diagnostics, and treatment. Should the need for advanced care arise, nearby Lubbock is a mecca of world-class healthcare resources including the flagship hospitals and several specialty centers within the Covenant Health system. University Medical Center Health System (UMC) in partnership with Texas Tech University provides regionally and nationally recognized specialties that include the UMC Timothy J. Harnar Burn Center.

Two campus centers for South Plains College offer more than 100 programs of study in innovative, relevant programs that span the arts and sciences, technical education, continuing education, and workforce development. The crown jewel of the educational community is Texas Tech University, recognized as a Tier One Carnegie Designated University with preeminent research partnerships in a variety of areas. Students can choose from 150 undergraduate majors, 100 master programs, and 50 doctoral programs in 13 colleges that include a school of law, a medical school, and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Two respected private colleges are also at home in the city, Lubbock Christian University and Wayland Baptist University.

Opportunities for entertainment and recreation are available to Floyd County residents throughout the year, including the opportunity to golf at one of the most challenging courses in West Texas. Nestled in picturesque Blanco Canyon, Floydada Country Club draws regional visitors to an outstanding, picturesque 9-hole golf course on a complex that includes a private swimming pool and picnic grounds. The small rural town of Lockney plays a big role in Floyd County life as the home of the region’s only full-service hospital. The city’s motto is “A Good Place to Call Home,” emphasizing the strong, cooperative community spirit that supports local schools and businesses. The city also hosts the Floyd County Fair each year, an event that has moved to various locations since the early 1900s. Nearly all of the activities that are highlighted at the fair represent a true slice of life for Lockney residents, from agricultural displays, a pet show, and the children’s barnyard to local beauty pageants, Western dancing, local talent, educational exhibits, antique auto shows, and fiddler’s contests.
