Lifestyle
From the Canaveral National Seashore Park in the north of the county to Sebastian Inlet State Park at the southern tip of the county, there are miles and miles of sandy beaches for recreation. Water and the activities that go along with being in a coastal community dominate the lifestyle in this area. The parks and recreation departments of the county and various municipalities, along with private business concerns, operate recreational facilities such as golf courses, racquetball courts, ball fields, skateboard parks, an ice-skating rink, beaches and lake-side parks.

For those more into dry land sports, such as golf, Brevard County is home to several excellent public and private golf courses, some having been around since the early 1900’s.  For team sports enthusiasts, Space Coast Stadium is the proud home of the Brevard County Manatees minor league baseball team. In addition to housing the Manatees, the stadium also hosts spring training for the Washington Nationals.  Some other great outdoor area activities include; boating, jet skiing, air boat rides, parasailing, fishing, diving, surfing, eco-adventures, kayaking, horseback riding and much more.  The Brevard Zoo and Forever Florida are also great options for family entertainment.

Shoppers will find a little everything close to home. Brevard County is home to antique shops, farmers markets, art festivals and street parties. Residents will find all kinds of treats in many of the downtown districts from Titusville to Port Canaveral and Eau Gallie to Melbourne.  Shopping for residents and visitors also has to include the world-famous Ron Jon Surf Shop in Cocoa Beach offering an assortment of surf and beach gear.  And of course there are a complete selection of national retailers throughout the county in malls and shopping centers.

Brevard County provides the community and visitors to the area with many cultural opportunities throughout the year. The Maxwell C. King Center has live theater, Broadway shows, and concerts throughout the year as well as summertime children’s programs.  You can also find exciting entertainment at The Cocoa Village Playhouse or The Henagar Center in Melbourne.

SERVICES
The economy of the county is quite strong and is based on a mixture of industry, agriculture and government. As home to the Kennedy Space Center and all of the facilities and businesses that support it, Brevard County has a high concentration of Technology related businesses and the highly educated persons that are employed in them. In addition agriculture and aquaculture make up more than 20% of the industry in the county. And thanks to its great coastal location and miles of beaches, tourism is a large part of the economy in the county as well.

Brevard County Florida’s public, and numerous private, elementary and secondary schools provide a high quality education and are consistently rated above the state average. Elementary and secondary education is provided by the Brevard Public Schools and private schools. In 2011, six of the county’s public schools were ranked by the state in the top ten schools in the state. Higher education is also well represented in the county with several facilities, including: Brevard Community College, with campuses in the north, central, and south areas of the county, along with extensions of the University of Central Florida and Rollins College, provide an outstanding educational environment. Florida Technological University has a full campus in the south end of the county. Barry University School of Law is located in Orlando, which is approximately 35 miles west of Titusville.

Health care is a priority in the County and is well represented by an excellent full-service hospital, healthcare facilities and human service agencies that offer a continuum of care, resources and support to meet the physical, mental and developmental needs of the community. The County is home to an excellent health care system, a continually expanding and improving hospital staffed with outstanding physicians, support by a dedicated emergency medical service staff. There are ten hospitals in the county, with 1,734 beds total. Health First is the largest healthcare provider in the county, consisting of three not-for-profit hospitals—Cape Canaveral Hospital in Cocoa Beach, Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, and Palm Bay Community Hospital in Palm Bay. Besides hospitalization, services include outpatient centers; the county’s only trauma center; home care; specialized programs for cancer, diabetes, heart, stroke, and rehabilitative services.

Cape Canaveral is home to a population of 9,912. It is part of the Palm Bay–Melbourne–Titusville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city of Cape Canaveral is located at the southern tip of a barrier island on the Atlantic coast of Florida. It is due south of the geographical feature Cape Canaveral. It is separated from the mainland by the Banana River, Merritt Island and the Indian River from east to west. It is also approximately the midpoint between Miami and Jacksonville and is slightly over 50 miles east of Orlando. This 1.9 square-mile beach and coastal community offers a very high quality of life to its residents. Adjacent to the north side of the city is the John F. Kennedy Space Center, NASA. Seven miles to the south of the City is Patrick Air Force Base. This strategic Florida location places the City in the center of America’s space facilities and immediately adjacent to Port Canaveral, the only deep water port between Fort Lauderdale and Jacksonville.  This location also means that the community is an integral part of the retirement-resort-vacation-recreation complex of the north beach area of Brevard County. Cocoa is an independent city of more than 16,400 residents and is located approximately 50 miles east of Orlando. Unlike many Florida communities with a high concentration of seniors, Cocoa’s largest age group is in the 20-44 age range. Rich in history and culture, the city of Cocoa, Florida is one of the oldest cities along the Indian River. It’s convenient Central Florida location is minutes from the Kennedy Space Center, Port Canaveral, Orlando International Airport and beautiful beaches. Cocoa Beach is a residential community and a tourist destination. It has a year round population of over  12,600, but seasonal visitors can triple that number. Located on a barrier island, nestled between the great Atlantic Ocean and the Banana River Lagoon on Florida’s Central East Coast, Cocoa Beach continues to link the birth of the Space Age with the wonders of the future. Just six miles long, and mostly less than one mile wide, Cocoa Beach is a great place to call home. Cocoa Beach is the destination for another 2.4 million day visitors per year; it is the primary tourist destination on the Florida Space Coast. Grant-Valkaria is a town in Brevard County, Florida, south of Melbourne, between Palm Bay and Sebastian. It is home to more than 3,800 residents. It is part of the Palm Bay–Melbourne–Titusville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Grant-Valkaria was incorporated as a town on July 25, 2006, by joining the two previously unincorporated communities of Grant and Valkaria.  A largely rural town in the south end of the county, the town includes older homes, newer homes on acre-plus lots and the county-owned Habitat Golf Course, a 6,836-yard, par-72 course near the Valkaria Airport. The town has held the locally popular Grant Seafood Festival every year on the last weekend of February since 1966. It is an historic community that has been in existence since the late 1800’s.

Nestled between the Indian River Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean, Indialantic offers many recreational opportunities for residents and visitors.   It is home to more than 2,700 residents. On any given day you’ll see surfers, swimmers, sun bathers, runners, walkers and bicyclists enjoying the Town’s recreational resources. Indialantic is situated on the barrier island that separates the Indian River Lagoon from the Atlantic Ocean. This island, approximately 35 miles in length, stretches south from Cape Canaveral to the Sebastian Inlet. The Melbourne Causeway connects Indialantic to the city of Melbourne across the Indian River Lagoon. Indialantic is bordered on the south by the town of Melbourne Beach and on the north by unincorporated Brevard County. Greater Indialantic, outside of the town boundaries, is an area of suburban beach homes in a beautiful natural setting dominated by water. Indialantic is home to several shops and restaurants. There are plenty of options for a great meal, new beach clothes or just hanging out in the sand.

The City of Melbourne is located on east central Florida’s Space Coast.  Melbourne is about an hour’s drive south of the Kennedy Space Center, and 1-1/2 hours due east of the Orlando area theme parks. The City is in the southern portion of Brevard County. Interstate-95 runs through the county from north-to-south.  Access roads from the west include the Beachline Expressway and U.S. 192, which runs through Melbourne to the beaches.  While most of Melbourne is located on the Florida mainland, a small portion is located on a barrier island. The Indian River Lagoon separates the mainland from the island. Spanning the Indian River Lagoon to connect the mainland to the barrier island is a pair of four-lane, high-rise bridges — the Melbourne Causeway and the Eau Gallie Causeway. The City is approximately 41 square miles in size, with about 75% of that land in use. The City of Melbourne has a population of more than 77,000. Melbourne International Airport is located near the center of the city. Melbourne contains defense and technology companies with a high concentration of high-tech workers. Melbourne also has two downtown business districts, the Downtown Eau Gallie Arts District and Historic Downtown Melbourne. This downtown area is home to many retail outlets as well as eating and drinking establishments within a four block area. The city of Melbourne contains over 555 acres of city park land, including 17 community parks, 13 neighborhood parks and five smaller city parks. Centered along New Haven Avenue, the historic commercial district is bounded by the saltwater Indian River Lagoon on the east and by a freshwater tributary known as Crane Creek on the south. Residents enjoy annual events and festivals as well as a nationally recognized art show.  Along with smaller cultural events. The Henegar Center for the Performing Arts gives residents a great venue for entertainment of all types.

Palm Bay has a population of over 103,000 residents, making it the most populous city in the county. The city is perfectly located on Florida’s east central coast, midway between Jacksonville and Miami. Off of I-95 take exits 173 and 176. Palm Bay is close to Melbourne and Orlando International Airports and Port Canaveral. US 1, a national scenic highway, winds along the banks of the Indian River Lagoon, a national estuary providing panoramic views and recreational opportunities for boating, fishing, birding, and eco-tours. In addition to the lagoon and its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, Palm Bay is surrounded by over 160,000 acres of undeveloped conservation land. Housing styles include a wide variety of single family homes, apartments, condominiums, town homes and gated subdivisions many right on the water. Many quality of life choices including employment opportunities from entrepreneurial family owned enterprises through a growing base of mid and large size technology and manufacturing companies. Educational opportunities include 24 public and private K through Grade 12 schools. Brevard Community College Palm Bay Campus prides itself on providing a center for baccalaureate and graduate education through the offerings of the University of Central Florida, Webster University and Barry University. Recreational activities include 29 city parks which include paintball and skateboarding, an aquatic center, a 200 acre regional park, two public / private golf courses, Turkey Creek Sanctuary, and the local beaches. The City of Rockledge is the oldest incorporated municipality in Brevard County, founded on the shoreline of the Indian River Lagoon on August 7, 1887. Rockledge covers approximately 11.5 square miles with a population of more than 25,000 residents.  The city of Rockledge was named for a coquina rock formation that extends into the Indian River. Rockledge’s reputation started in the 1800’s as a Florida resort community. This early resort community included beautiful homes, stores, several schools and a church. Since then the city has quickly grown into the 4th largest city in Brevard County. The mild weather, location and the companies needed to support the NASA space missions over the years have dramatically grown the city of Rockledge. The city is located near shopping, restaurants, beaches and features easy access to Orlando and other large Florida cites. Kennedy Space Center is only a short distance away as are the local beaches. There are no lack of parks in Rockledge, giving residents many options for their recreation. And of course the ocean and the beaches are close to home. Golfers can enjoy some classic courses that have been in play since the early 1900’s. The city is also home to Wuesthoff Hospital. Wuesthoff Hospital has a large staff of doctors and is well known for its Healthy Heart and Community Health Programs for all ages. The Rockledge School system currently includes a high school, a middle school and 2 elementary schools, and a magnet school. There are also 4 private schools in the area. Rockledge offers some of the most beautiful homes in the state of Florida and is a wonderful place to call home.

Satellite Beach is a coastal city of more than 10,000 residents. It is located between the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Indian River to the west.  It is part of the Palm Bay–Melbourne–Titusville Metropolitan Statistical Area. With both ocean and river frontage, Satellite Beach is the largest beachside community in South Brevard County. Threatened Atlantic loggerhead sea turtles nest on the city’s ocean beaches at densities of approximately one nest per 10 feet of shoreline per year. Endangered green sea turtles deposit thousands of nests along the city’s ocean beach each year. And endangered right whales calve off the city’s shoreline. Endangered West Indian manatees frequent the city’s canals and the Banana River. Satellite Beach fosters an array of parks, recreational facilities and natural landscapes. Hightower Beach Park was recently renovated by a community partnership with Montecito Community Development District and state funds from the Florida Preservation 2000 and Florida Land and Water grant programs. The 15 acre park contains the natural dune system and has a boardwalk along the coastline. Signage along the boardwalk provides information on whales, turtles, birds, famous rock and more. The city offers its residents a high quality of life in a beautiful natural setting.

Titusville is the county seat of Brevard County. It is home to more than 43,000 residents. Nicknamed Space City, USA Titusville is on the Indian River, west of Merritt Island and the Kennedy Space Center and south-southwest of the Canaveral National Seashore. It is a principal city of the Palm Bay–Melbourne–Titusville Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Titusville is the only place on the planet where rockets launch, sea turtles nest and soothing sunrises give way to inviting surf.  The contradiction of high-tech wonders of the space program and the natural beauty of the area places Titusville in a class by itself.  Titusville is the neighbor to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and Canaveral National Seashore.

This region attracts residents and visitors with its vast activities including viewing rocket launches, surfing, bird watching, year-round golf, fantastic fresh and saltwater fishing and thrilling airboat rides.
