Comal County is a beautiful county located on the Edwards Plateau in central Texas. The county is a scenic hill country county with spring fed streams, the Comal river, Guadalupe river and Canyon Lake. It’s one of the top 10 fastest growing counties in the US.  New Braunfels is the county seat with a population of over 69,000 residents. New Braunfels is twenty-nine miles northeast of San Antonio and forty-five miles southwest of Austin. The Guadalupe River and, since 1964, Canyon Lake drain the central hills and valleys of the county. Cibolo Creek, which empties into the San Antonio River, forms the southwestern boundary of the county.

New Braunfels is a popular Texas tourist town that was founded in 1845 by Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels region of Germany and a group of German farmers and craftsmen.  German names can be seen on the billboards and street names throughout the city.  New Braunfels has a population of over 36,000 and is one of the fastest growing cities in Texas. Every fall the city hosts Wurstfest which is one of the largest German festivals in America. The city is also know for its amazing antique shopping. Austin is 40 miles to the north of the city and San Antonio is just 25 miles to the south. The historic towns of Gruene, TX and Canyon Lake are also just a few minutes away. With the Comal River and Guadalupe River running through New Braunfels, residents and visitors enjoy a variety of water recreational activities as well as stunning natural beauty. During the summer months the nationally-known Schlitterbaun Park serves as one of the biggest attractions in the area, drawing people from all over the country.

Nestled along the banks of the Comal River, Downtown New Braunfels offers some of the finest shopping, dining, entertainment and history in the area. Rich in German heritage, the area features a dense concentration of intact historic architecture from the traditional German craftsmanship of the 1840s, the elaborate decorative styles of the Victorian-era, through the sleek simplicity of the Art Deco and Moderne alongside contemporary development.  Downtown New Braunfels offers shopping in the trendiest of boutiques, visiting the weekly farmer’s market, dining in one of many fabulous restaurants and bakeries, unwinding in a pub while listening to great music and staying in a historic hotel or bed and breakfast. Bulverde, on Cibolo Creek nineteen miles west of New Braunfels in southwestern Comal County, was settled in 1850. Recreation abounds in the Bulverde/Spring Branch area, affording residents and visitors opportunities for adventure and fun. There are state parks nearby and the Guadalupe River runs right through Spring Branch. Hunting is a favorite sport in the Texas Hill Country. Golf is abundant in the area. Fishing and skiing are popular on Canyon Lake. San Antonio, is only 20 minutes away. The city of Bulverde is in the process of developing its central historic downtown to offer even more services and opportunities.

Canyon Lake and the other small communities that surround the lake named Canyon Lake are all classified as Census designated places and not cities or towns, but together their populations equal more than 22,000 residents. That is almost 25% of the total population of Comal County.  The area is considered the water recreation capital of Texas and is only 15 minutes from Interstate Highway 35 or from Highway 281.  The area is full of natural and scenic beauty, the River Road runs along the Guadalupe River between Canyon Lake and Gruene/New Braunfels, and is lined with beautiful Cypress trees, tubing and rafting outfitters, tent camping, cabins and cottages. It is a natural playground that residents and visitors both enjoy. Canyon Lake has 80 miles of shoreline surrounded by beautiful neighborhoods.  The lake offers residents and visitors alike plentiful opportunities for enjoying fishing, boating, sailing, kayaking, floating the rivers, jet skiing, swimming, rafting, canoeing, wake boarding, water skiing and more. Those looking for more than outdoor recreation will find that the Canyon Lake area is convenient to many area attractions such as shopping, colleges and universities, state of the art medical care, amusement and recreation destinations, cultural centers, arts and music venues and locally owned businesses. In addition residents are only a 30 minute drive from San Antonio and all of its urban amenities.

Garden Ridge

Garden Ridge is on Interstate Highway 35 near the Bexar and Guadalupe county lines twelve miles southwest of New Braunfels in Comal County. It is home to around 2000 residents. When the community was incorporated on April 4, 1972, it became the first new town in the county in 127 years.   The Garden Ridge area has a long history and has been home to residents from all across many different areas including Native American Indians, Spanish and German settlers. Each group has given the community a little bit of its culture, giving the area unique eel. While Garden Ridge has its roots as an area favored by retirees, recently more young families are moving into the area and are changing the makeup of the community.  Garden Ridge residents’ value their youth as evidenced by the many local projects sponsored by organizations such as the Garden Ridge-Bracken Lions Club and the Garden Ridge Women’s Club.  Great programs such as Boy Scouts, CYO Youth Sports are available for families with kids.  Other local amenities include Paul Davis Park which includes two covered pavilions, barbecue hut, picnic tables with grills, playground equipment, and a softball field.  The community center serves as the hub of local activities with facilities for events and gatherings. Garden Ridge offers residents a wonderful small town atmosphere, with all of the amenities of San Antonio a short drive away.
