From the first claim staked in 1877, Bisbee became one of the world’s largest and most prosperous mining areas. Tombstone’s old courthouse is a museum filled with the glitter and guns of those who tamed the territory. Within the 12,000-square-foot, two-story 1882 Victorian structure, exhibits interpret with life and death in a frontier mining town. No other glimpse of the true Old Tombstone can match the treasures found in this historic park.

Tucson’s Historic Districts

Armory Park Historic District
West of Stone Avenue between 12th and 19th Streets
Elegant Queen Anne Victorians blend with Anglo Territorial architectural elements in this enclave developed in the late 1800s by the Southern Pacific Railroad. “Anglo Territorial” is a common name for the charming homes that incorporate materials from Mexico into American designs inspired by Spanish Colonial styling.

Barrio Historico Historic District
South of Cushing Street between Stone Avenue and the railroad
Also known as “Barrio Viejo,” this neighborhood features over 150 adobe homes—many of which have been restored. The district is part of the Barrio Libre, the oldest of the city’s residential areas. Cushing Street Bar, catering to Tucson residents for more than 100 years, proudly displays photographs of the original neighborhood.

Pie Allen Neighborhood
South of 6th Street between Park Avenue and 6th Avenue
Anglo Territorial, Sonoran adobe , and Revival styles dominate the housing in this historic district, named for an apple pie salesman with the nickname of Pie Allen. It was John Brackett Allen who recognized the value of purchasing an expanse of land so that housing could be built for railroad workers.

West University Historic District
South of Speedway Boulevard between Tydall Avenue and Stone
An eclectic mix of architectural styles graces this turn-of-the-century neighborhood, where rows of quiet streets offer a casual family atmosphere in close proximity to downtown attractions and the University of Arizona’s vast resources.

El Presidio
South of 6th Street between Granada and Church Avenues
Established in 1775 around the Spanish Presidio, this neighborhood represents the genesis of Tucson as a settlement. The Tucson Museum of Art complex and the Old Town Artisans enjoy the unique atmosphere of this highly celebrated district, where magnificent buildings add grace and elegance to every scene.
