Established in 1650, Anne Arundel is distinguished as one of Maryland’s first counties. Forming a triangle with the cities of Baltimore and Washington, the county serves as the water recreation center of Maryland. Anne Arundel County provides easy access to the District of Columbia and Baltimore, a fact that has encouraged considerable growth and development. New residential communities and neighborhoods have sprung up in response to the large number of high-tech and research industries moving into the area as well as the expanding BWI Airport.

Southern Anne Arundel County offers a pleasing contrast to the region’s highly urbanized centers with its rural atmosphere of quaint small towns and villages, rolling horse farms and lush tobacco plantations. Anne Arundel County’s major employment sectors include high technology, research and development, manufacturing, travel and tourism. Government also plays an important economic role in the county, which is home to the Naval Academy, Fort Meade, the National Security Agency, and the State of Maryland offices. The county’s strategic location is enhanced by a comprehensive network of highways that include Interstates 695 (Baltimore Beltway), 295 (Baltimore Washington Parkway) and 97 as well as federal highways 2, 50, and 301.

Services
Throughout the area, residents enjoy the influence and availability of well-respected and prestigious institutes of higher education such as the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis and St. Johns College. Anne Arundel Community College operates conveniently located campuses throughout the county, offering day and evening classes for continuing education. Public and private schools provide innovative curricula and enrichment program to educate the leaders of tomorrow. Students are encouraged to learn at their own pace and develop to their full potential through a diversity of cultural, intellectual, and physical education activities.

Newcomers can look forward to excellent healthcare provided by a strong network of area hospitals, support facilities, and skilled professionals. Anne Arundel Medical Center, North Arundel Hospital, and Fort Meade-Kimbrough Army Hospital meet every medical need. North Arundel Hospital, an affiliate of the University of Maryland Medical System, is part of the expansive North Arundel Health System. This system now encompasses several off-site centers that include Nighttime Pediatrics North in Pasadena, Special Beginnings Birth and Women’s Center in Arnold, Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital in Baltimore, and Sunrise Assisted and Independent Living in Severna Park.

Quality of Life
Anne Arundel County is probably most well known as a center for boating activities and water sports. Ten percent of the total area of this region is set along the Chesapeake Bay shoreline, making fishing, crabbing, sailing, swimming, and water-skiing popular pastimes. Several boating festivals and events are held annually on Chesapeake Bay including the world’s largest sail and powerboat shows and the prestigious Annapolis to Newport, Rhode Island yacht races.

Ample recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts include more than 5,000 acres of lush parkland. Harness Creek features a Victorian-style park with formal gardens as well as an ice-skating rink and visitor’s center. The nationally recognized B & A Trail provides more than 13 miles of paved road running along the former railroad track, a perfect route for joggers, bikers and walkers. Downs Memorial Park offers picnicking, fishing and hiking. Equestrians or those who just enjoy horseback riding will want to explore the Andover Equestrian Center.

Historic buildings and landmarks from colonial days add quaint charm to the county’s landscape. London Town Publik House and Gardens is a restored 18th-century inn open for tours. In addition to reverence for the past, support for the arts is exceptionally strong. Community-sponsored local symphonies, theater groups, opera companies and museum exhibitions make this an exciting and stimulating place to live, work, and play. The Annapolis Fine Arts Festival is a popular annual event for the culturally minded, although sports fans may be more interested in the football, lacrosse and basketball games at the U.S. Naval Academy.

Given its distinctive character and ambiance by the Chesapeake Bay, Anne Arundel County claims a unique charm and appeal. Rich in heritage and yet progressive in outlook, this vital area managed to seamlessly weave quality leisure activities into the fabric of many lifestyles. The result is a diversity of opportunity to enjoy an exceptional quality of life in close proximity to the metropolitan centers of Baltimore and Washington, DC.
