Quality of Life
Carroll County was created in 1825 from land once inhabited by the Creek Indians and is now located just 45 miles from Atlanta. Located in the heart of west Georgia, the county is home to seven municipalities including Carrollton, Bowdon, Mount Zion, Temple, Villa Rica, Roopville, and Whitesburg. Carroll County is also home to the State University of West Georgia, a public four-year institution serving more than 5,500 undergraduate students each year. In addition, Carroll County houses McIntosh Park, a popular 480-acre recreation site situated along the Chattahoochee River.

Carroll County also serves as a regional shopping destination in western Georgia offering everything from large, modern malls to old-fashioned downtown shopping districts. Local festivals in Carroll County include Mayfest in Carrollton, Goldrush Days in Villa Rica, and Founders Day in Bowdon. Local communities also support the Carroll County Cultural Arts Alliance, a citizen based coalition that sponsors community theater, chorus, art exhibits, classes, and festivals.

Carroll County is located 45 miles west of Atlanta and 90 miles east of Birmingham. Carroll is the heart of west Georgia and forms the western boundary of metropolitan Atlanta. The county is easily accessed by Interstate 20, US Highways 27, 78 and eight state highways.

Two public school systems, both city and county, and several private schools offer quality education for Carroll County’s youth.
The State University of West Georgia, a public, four-year University, serves more than 5,500 undergraduate students each year with a wide range of programs. In addition, Carroll Technical Institute offers a wide range of business and trade programs.

To ensure continued economic prosperity, the county offers new local businesses a variety of incentives. Many firms have been drawn to the area and received 100% free port on all inventory, assistance with site preparation, road improvements, and industrial revenue bond financing.

Carrollton, incorporated in 1829, is the largest municipality in Carroll County and serves as the county seat. Carrollton is located just 50 miles west of Atlanta, 80 miles east of Birmingham and 14 miles south of I-20 at the junction of U.S. 27 and GA Highway 16. With a location conducive to economic strength and prosperity, the county serves as a retail, commercial, education, manufacturing, and health care center for several counties in western Georgia and eastern Alabama. The city’s diverse industrial base includes record, rod, cable, and plastics manufacturing, textiles and aluminum products, and the production of fiber optics for the communications industry. The city is also home to the State University of West Georgia, which further enhances the community with its quality selection of cultural arts, programs, and events.

With a history spanning well over 100 years, Temple was settled in 1882 along the Georgia Pacific Railroad lines that once connected Atlanta and Birmingham. Today, Temple is undeniably the fastest growing city in Carroll County. Boasting a prime western Georgia location, the city is conveniently located just north of I-20, 42 miles west of Atlanta and 11 miles north of Carrollton, via State Highway 113. Enjoying an enviable suburban-rural lifestyle, Temple residents are most proud of their excellent public schools, close-knit community, and strong citizen involvement in the local community. The community’s most popular community event is the “Street Festival and Car Show” held each September.

The City of Villa Rica is located in the northernmost portion of Carroll County and is perched along the Douglas County border. The city is also located in close proximity to Highways 101, 61, and 78. Villa Rica has thrived in recent years due to its pleasing combination of country and city living. While the greater Atlanta area is only a 30 to 40-minute drive away, Villa Rica enjoys all the comforts of tranquil country living. Offering less traffic and an overall slower pace of life, Villa Rica residents proudly call each other by name and take pride in their local library, churches, and schools. Nearby Carrollton provides residents additional amenities ranging from healthcare facilities and higher education to a fine selection of cultural arts.
