HISTORICAL ATTRACTIONS / RICHMOND’S REVITALIZED RIVERFRONT

Stretching along a 1.25-mile corridor from the historic Tredegar Iron Works site — just west of 5th Street, to 17th Street on the east — Richmond’s revitalized riverfront area meanders through premier historic sites. Visitors will see the rebuilt James River & Kanawha and Haxall canals, including a major Turning Basin. Close by are hotels, shops, restaurants, and offices. The canals trace four centuries of Richmond history and were originally envisioned by George Washington to provide a link to the West. One part of the canal restoration project was the addition of a pedestrian walkway that skirts the beautiful James River. History medallions, exhibits, and a Civil War Visitor Center combine to tell the story of the Richmond Riverfront.
