Services
South of Jefferson County, sparsely populated Bibb County is encompassed within the Birmingham Metro region. Area youth receive a quality education through the Bibb County School District, operated from its headquarters in the county seat of Centreville. The Career Technical Center is located in West Blocton, providing a variety of career technical programs to students from the Bibb County and West Blocton high schools for more than 30 years, the center offers a peaceful setting for both students and faculty. Opportunities for higher education are abundant in the Birmingham Metro area, including a number of community college systems, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Samford University, Birmingham-Southern College, and the University of Montevallo.

State-of-the-art healthcare is available just around the corner from home in Centreville at the Bibb Medical Center. Built in 1956 through sales tax funding approved by local citizens, the hospital has grown and evolved through the decades into a full-service facility that offers a number of specialties. Diverse facilities and services include the 124-bed Bibb County Nursing Home, the Cahaba Trace Apartments, Bibb Medical Center Home Health, and Community Home Health. Staffed by skilled professionals, the medical center offers advanced clinics that include urgent care, orthopedic, urology, gastroenterology, oncology, neurology, outpatient surgery, a pain clinic, Woodstock Family Dentistry, and the Woodstock Health Clinic. Other outpatient services include physical and respiratory therapies.

Lifestyle
As Metro Birmingham continues to grow and expand, Bibb County is welcoming a steady influx of new residents to its abundant open space and friendly small towns. In fact, more than half of the residents of Bibb County are commuters to employment centers beyond the county’s borders. Beyond its association with Metro Birmingham, Bibb County is closely aligned with the West Alabama trade market and Greater Tuscaloosa. Newcomers to the county will find a serene home that offers exquisite natural beauty at every turn. The Kathy Stiles Freeland Bibb County Glades Preserve, operated by the Nature Conservancy, is a botanical wonder that serves as a protected home to more than 60 rare plant species. The Little Cahaba River flows through the preserve, harboring dozens of exotic aquatic creatures. The site also includes Brighthope Furnace, the earliest ironworks built in the State of Alabama. Nationally famous for its rich biological diversity and natural beauty, the Cahaba River is one of the most popular canoeing destinations and the longest free-flowing river in the state.

Bibb County is steeped in history, from rustic cemeteries to the Historic River Bend Schoolhouse, the grand architecture of the courthouse in Centreville, and the remnants of yesterday’s coke ovens in West Blocton. Brierfield Ironworks Historical State Park situated between Montevallo and Centreville was built around the ruins of the Bibb Furnaces that were destroyed toward the end of the Civil War. In addition to historic buildings and Civil War re-enactments, the park offers camping, hiking and nature trails, and a swimming pool. Another grand historic site is the Woodstock United Methodist Church, featuring 19th century Gothic Revival Ecclesiastical architecture. Retaining its structural integrity, the church has been in continuous use since its completion in 1893. The home selection is diverse, ranging from older properties to newer construction on spacious lots. Those who appreciate a slower pace and the intimate community atmosphere of a simpler time will find a comfortable and friendly home in Bibb County.

Serving as the Bibb County seat of government, Centreville boasts a full-service hospital, modern schools, and a gallery of well-preserved architecture. The focal point of the city is the grand 1890 courthouse, although several historic churches and commercial buildings grace the cityscape including the 1890 Centreville Baptist Church. The beautiful Cahaba River flows through this area, adding scenic beauty and opportunities for first-rate canoeing. Brent is less than two miles from Centreville, providing quick and easy access to Centreville’s advanced healthcare facilities and schools. Brent experienced a surge of newcomers in the ’90s, boosting the city to the number one position in Bibb County for population. In recent years, the growth rate has slowed, allowing the city to recover from its temporary growing pains and position itself for further development.

The historic town of West Blocton had its origin with the coal miners of West Alabama, refusing to become a ghost town at the end of the mining era. The early settlement of Blocton was the headquarters for the Cahaba Coal Mining Company and the site of the innovative beehive coke ovens. In addition to the rustic remnants of its colorful history, the community displays great pride in the natural legacy of the extremely rare and exquisitely beautiful Cahaba River Lilly that grows near the Cahaba River. Each year, residents welcome visitors to the Cahaba River Festival to celebrate the largest stand of these aquatic plants in the entire world. The Cahaba River also serves as a premier recreational asset for the community, a favored site for anglers and canoeing enthusiasts. West Blocton is the home of the Bibb County School District’s career center, which enjoys an idyllic site on a pine-clad hilltop.
