Nestled in the rolling hills of the Appalachian Mountains, the Jasper Campus of Bevill State Community College provides a first-rate yet affordable education in an historic setting. Originally founded as Walker College in 1938, the college was associated with the University of Alabama at Birmingham before merging with Bevill State Community College in 1998. In addition to historic Davis Hall, the campus now features 17 buildings that include the Frances Israel Center with its cafeteria and meeting rooms and Murphy Residence Hall. The Irma Dilg Nicholson Library and the Carl Hare Child Development Center serve the college and the community.

State-of-the-art healthcare is available close to home in Walker County, anchored by the Walker Baptist Medical Center. As part of the progressive Baptist Health System, the hospital features some of the most modern diagnostic imaging equipment in Alabama, nearly 270 private rooms, and a premier emergency center that treats more than 47,000 patients annually. Expansions, upgrades, and improvements are continually in motion at Walker Baptist Medical Center, which recently added a new 16-bed Senior Care Unit to meet the medical needs of an increasing number of seniors in Walker County. At the same time, a growing number of families prompted the completion of a $1.7 million redesign and expansion of the Walker Baptist Family Center. The new name was given to the obstetric, gynecology, and nursery unit of the medical center, which offers a modern and family-centered setting for women and infants. Many other specialized units are available at the medical center, from the sleep disorders lab to same-day surgery.
