Support programs are abundant and relative, including wellness and educational seminars that proactively assist residents in taking control of their own health. The hospital is located between downtown Brevard and Pisgah Forest, bringing superior healthcare close to home for every resident of Transylvania County. Many of the hospital’s programs have garnered special accreditations and recognitions. The list is exhaustive but includes asthma education, a birthing center, advanced imaging, diagnostics, diabetes care and education, the Eye Center of Excellence, hospice, community programs, pain management, rehabilitation, outpatient services, respiratory therapies, transitional care, wellness and fitness programs, and women’s services.

Education is a high priority in Transylvania County, home to a quality public school district and one of North Carolina’s most respected private colleges. Brevard College enriches the county in countless ways, most pragmatically with an annual economic impact of more than $9 million. This small liberal arts college offers distinctive degree programs in one of the most idyllic and naturally beautiful settings possible. Students can choose from more than 40 majors and minors—including pre-professional programs like teacher licensure, pre-med or pre-dentistry, and pre-law—and enjoy outstanding opportunities through partnerships with organizations like the Pisgah Forest Institute and the Library of Congress’ Adventures of the American Mind. U.S. News & World Report ranks Brevard’s first-year experience as one of the best in the nation. The 120-acre campus is ideally situated for unusual programs in ecology and wilderness leadership.

Lifestyle
Rich in cultural and recreational opportunities, Transylvania County strikes a fine balance between rural tranquility and urban amenities. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, the Brevard Music Center has been providing young musicians with the opportunity to develop their talents for more than 70 years. Each summer, hundreds of students from age 14 to post college graduates come together to “eat, sleep, and breathe music” for seven full weeks. More than 80 public performances crown this annual program that blends distinguished professional musicians with an intense performance schedule. Paul Porter Center for the Performing Arts at the college is the crown jewel of the campus, hosting the collegiate theatre program and many world-renowned artists. Complementing the cultural gems are world-class recreational opportunities in the Pisgah National Forest. Downtown Brevard is alive and pulsating with exciting events, including the Festival of Arts, performances by the Brevard Philharmonic Orchestra, and countywide revivals and music festivals. This vibrant area offers more than 15 summer and year round camps for boys and girls.

The county seat and leading urban community is Brevard, claiming a courthouse that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Transylvania County is nature’s playground, boasting Whitewater Falls, the highest waterfall in the Eastern United States. Residents enjoy outdoor adventures just beyond the front doorstep, including hiking, mountain biking, off-roading, camping, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, hunting, and fishing. The county provides a wealth of developed and preserved recreational sites and amenities, including the Transylvania Activity Center in Brevard. The gymnasium is complemented by additional activity space and more than 30 acres of recreational fields for sports courts and a playground. One of the county’s recreation department holdings is the 1917 Silvermont Mansion, willed to the county in 1972 to serve as a recreational park and community center. No doubt, newcomers will agree with the assessment of Brevard as one of the “40 Best College Towns” in America once they begin to experience the rare delights of this disarming and enchanting corner of Western North Carolina.
