Services
Anchored by the City of Fayetteville and the metropolitan area that surrounds it, beautiful Cumberland County serves as the economic engine of southeast North Carolina. Although Fayetteville maintains a separate government, it remains closely aligned with the county geographically and serves as a hub for the county’s smaller communities. The towns of Hope Mills, Spring Lake, Stedman, Wade, Falcon, Linden, and Godwin combine with the substantial populations stationed at Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base that fall at least partly within Cumberland County boundaries. Military personnel and major government employers have played an important role in shaping this region. In fact, Womack Army Medical Center is respected as one of the nation’s finest military healthcare providers.

Throughout Cumberland County, healthcare services are outstanding. The 755-bed Cape Fear Valley Health System has assumed a position of regional leadership, providing a comprehensive, advanced network of facilities that include full-service hospitals, a cancer treatment center, open heart surgery unit, a birthing center, occupational healthcare, rehabilitation, and a behavioral health center. The extensive community education and outreach programs provided by this system range from health screenings to an award-winning fitness and wellness center.

Education is a lifelong journey in Cumberland County, where quality public and private schools are available on every academic level. Fayetteville is the undisputed center of education for the region, home to Fayetteville Technical Community College, the second largest technical training college in North Carolina and the site of the Center for Business and Industry. The latter assist in supporting economic growth by providing specialized training for new employers. Fayetteville State University, part of the University of North Carolina system, provides academic programs in the humanities and social sciences, in basic and applied sciences, in teacher education, and in business and economics. Other options close to home include North Carolina State University at Raleigh, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Carolina Bible College, the campuses at Pope Air Force Base and Fort Bragg, Methodist College, and Shaw University at Fayetteville.

Lifestyle
Located in a region known as the “Sandhills,” Cumberland County and Fayetteville represent the economic growth center of southeastern North Carolina. The county has progressed from its beginnings as a riverfront distribution center to a highly commercialized area that offers a wide variety of convenient services to its residents as well as those in neighboring counties. Recreational amenities in this region are outstanding, from county and city parks to wonderful lakes and championship golf courses.

Cumberland County offers access to some of the most popular beaches on the East Coast, yet the breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountains remain close enough for weekend adventures. Other nearby attractions include the North Carolina Motor Speedway in Rockingham and Raven Rock State Park. New residents can enjoy exploring several natural woodland areas and open spaces where they can fish, boat, and swim in a number of bodies of water. Among the many public and private golf courses is the world-famous Pinehurst Resort, offering 144 holes of superb play.

The “All-American City” of Fayetteville provides county residents with urban treasures and Southern hospitality. Beautiful urban neighborhoods, magnificent country homes, warm and friendly people, revitalized historic districts, vibrant new construction, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere are some of the highlights of this rapidly growing area. Newcomers are consistently drawn to the contrast between “big city” advantages and small-town charm, with a cost of living that remains low and a high quality of life.

Those who appreciate the arts will discover a calendar of exciting events from Bach to ballet, while area museums preserve and interpret the county’s rich historic legacy. Galleries, unique boutiques, antique shops, and major shopping malls combine with entertainment centers and amusements to cater to every age group and taste. Whether you choose to settle in one of the vibrant new residential developments that dot the countryside or a sleepy small town, Cumberland County brings together the elements of history, beauty, affordability, and quality in abundant measure.

Several small towns have grown up around the leading metropolitan center of Fayetteville, each one of them providing a small-town setting near major urban amenities. Home to approximately 10 percent of the U.S. Army’s active forces, Fort Bragg is a self-contained “city” with schools, housing, shopping, churches, offices, a major medical facility, recreation, and entertainment. Fort Bragg sprawls over 251 square miles and stretches into four counties, with the training complex of Camp MacKall reaching into an addition three counties. Fort Bragg contributes an estimated $4.1 billion in annual revenue to local communities. The combination of Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base add $2 billion in retail sales to Cumberland County.

Missions flown from Pope range from providing airlift and air support to American armed forces to humanitarian causes worldwide. The base covers 3.5 square miles and provides a home for approximately 4,700 military personnel and 1,150 dependents. Named for a lake that was formed when railroad construction dammed up water across a swamp, Spring Lake has grown slowly but steadily throughout its history. Today, the community is characterized as a modern and thriving town in one of North Carolina’s fastest growing regions. Fort Bragg has played a major role in the evolution of Spring Lake, beginning with the first population boom during World War II. Bragg Boulevard, the four-lane “mainline” that links Spring Lake with Fort Bragg and Fayetteville was constructed at that time. The major of Spring Lake residents are either in the military, dependents of military personnel, government civil service employees, or retired military personnel. The presence of Pope Air Force Base along the western border of the town further reinforces these unique demographics. New home construction is brisk in this area, including major subdivisions like Village on the Lake. Fayetteville Technical Community College has also expanded to offer a site at Spring Lake.
