Broome County is located in the southern tier of the state, at the border with Pennsylvania. The population of the county is just over 200,000. The county was named in honor of John Broome, who was lieutenant governor of New York in 1806 when Broome County was established. Its county seat is the city of Binghamton, which is also the largest community in the county.

Lifestyle
Located where the Susquehanna and Chenango Rivers meet, the greater Binghamton area is home to numerous bridges set among a backdrop of rolling hills. Broome County has a lot to offer the visitors and residents alike. The area is home to countless parks, shopping plazas and restaurants as well as many popular recreational areas. The landscape lends itself to outdoor recreation, with forests as far as the eye can see, rivers teaming with fish, scenic streams and quiet lakes can all be found within the county. It is this unique geography coupled with a strong commitment to the environment that provides an abundance of wildlife and hundreds of miles of unspoiled nature. There are several golf courses throughout the county that can satisfy the needs of any golfer. For those who would rather watch than participate, Broome County Veteran’s Memorial Arena offers the chance to catch a Binghamton Mets baseball game.

There are seasonal farmers’ markets for fresh produce and seasonal goodies. Enjoy a stroll to an art gallery and relish in masterpieces from historical collections as well as emerging regional artists throughout the communities in the area. The region is also known for the many antique shops lining the region. For families with children, visit the Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park, or they take a spin on one of the six restored, antique carousels that are in the city (the largest collection of its type in the country.)

Theatrical performances, Jazz ensembles, chamber concerts, festivals, community events, educational programs, children’s playhouses, world class singing, national tours, student recitals…and the list goes on. In and around Broome County numerous venues provide exceptional performing arts, including; Anderson Center, Binghamton Philharmonic, Binghamton Summer Music Festival, Broadway Theater League, Broome Community College Little Theater, Cider Mill Playhouse, Endicott Performing Arts Center, Forum Theatre, KNOW Theater, Schorr Family Firehouse Stage and the Tri-Cities Opera.

The City Of Binghamton was the birthplace to IBM and businesses of every size have found a home in Greater Binghamton. Easy access to major transportation routes, highways and airports makes Broome County easily reachable from any direction. The county is home to several major corporations serving every field from Healthcare to Aerospace and employing thousands of local residents.

Broome County enjoys one of the best public school systems in the nation. The Broome County area workforce is on average more highly educated than the nation. This commitment to education begins in high school where local students are less likely to drop out than are students elsewhere and they score higher than the national average on standardized tests. Full-day Kindergarten programs are also offered in most school districts, as are pre-kindergarten programs. Daycare options are plentiful and reasonably priced. And the county even maintains a complete set of resources for parents who want to home school their children. Higher education is well represented in the area, with Binghamton University one of four university centers within the State University of New York system. Binghamton enrolls nearly 14,000 students in bachelor’s, masters and doctoral programs. Binghamton University participates in Division I athletics. Broome Community College located in the area, enrolls nearly 6,000 full and part time students in its credit programs. The College is a member of the Middle State Association of Colleges and Schools. Its curriculums are registered by the State Education Department and, accredited, where appropriate, by specific career-accrediting organizations.

Health care is a major strength in the county, with two major hospital systems. Both provide primary care clinics, physician networks, wellness programs, and home health care/long term care alternatives. Lourdes Hospital is a 277-bed hospital in Binghamton. It is a member of Ascension Healthcare. The main hospital campus includes a Hospice program, an Ambulatory Surgery Center, and a Regional Cancer Center. Reaching beyond these boundaries, Lourdes has established a network of primary care physicians at convenient sites throughout the region. United Health Services Health Care System provides care at two hospitals: the 280-bed Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center in Johnson City and the 236-bed Binghamton General Hospital in Binghamton. UHS also operates Family Care Centers in several of the communities in the county, as well as nursing facilities and home care in some areas. The health care system is also affiliated with United Medical Associates, P.C., a 125-member, multi-specialty physician group with practices throughout the area. Broome County Preventive Health Clinic Services, also offers programs designed to assure the provision of personal health care when it is otherwise unavailable.

Broome county and the Greater Binghamton area offers its residents everything from quiet rural life to metropolitan excitement. Recreation education and high quality service all combine to make this region a wonderful place to call home.
