ACADEMICS / PUBLIC EDUCATION SYSTEM

Enrollment Requirements
State law requires that a child be five years of age by midnight, August 31, of the current enrollment year to enter kindergarten or six years of age by that same date and time to enroll in first grade. The law also requires a specific program of immunizations be completed that include DTP or DTaP, polio, rubella, mumps and measles, and hepatitis B. Certified waivers for religious, personal, or medical reasons must be filed with the school. Your school administration office can provide any details you need about immunization requirements. To begin the registration process, contact your local school. Necessary paperwork will include an official birth certificate, proof of residency, and transcripts from the school previously attended if possible.

Accountability
To ensure a quality education, both Oregon and Washington administer tests that measure student achievement of basic academic requirements. These assessment and reporting tools assist districts and schools to refine instructional practices and focus curriculum around current needs. They also provide parents with information about the academic progress of their child. Test results are available from individual schools and districts as well as the state departments of education. They are also available on the Internet, along with a variety of other profile information:
