Metropolitan Memphis offers a mid-latitude temperate climate with four distinct seasons and a 65 percent rate of sunny days per year. The summer months are warm and humid from moisture moving in from the Gulf of Mexico, and brief thunderstorms can occur. Autumn is less humid and mild, moving into winters that can have short-lived sub-freezing periods as well as brief warm spells as high as 70 degrees. Spring arrives in late February or early March and can bring rain storms and even severe weather. Snow is rare but does occur at an annual average of 5.7 inches.
